James gives her booze, we get that scene because (presumably) the writers thought it would be funny. James/Steve drink as well, Chakwas has her brandy, it's not exactly an uncommon practice in the military.

There is a scene in ME1 where Ash wants to have a drink with Shepard. Apparently her new writer remembered that scene and thought that it would be soooo funny to get her drunk in ME3.

as much as i like this scene (i always thought Ash was a more realistic character than Kaiden, who was too cookie cutter)... and having a soldier who puts up a brave face show a moment of weakness is as human as it gets...
i kinda wish the writers would have remembered the way they described the Reaper's tactics and strategy as they were outlined in ME1 over this little tidbit.
