I've heard Merrill is supposed to be decent with correct specc/gear, but never played her (... and only finished DA2 once) now im gonna restart the campaign to have a "proper" savefile before Dragon Age3 and wanted her in "my story".

Yes, I have makers sigh / emporium dlc so I can respecc her from scratch.

Depends on whether you want to use her as a blood mage (blood of the first) or not.

Blood mage is the way to go for max damage output.

I usually wait until level 11  when you can use “Wounds of the Past”

By then you should have her approval high for 1 health = 1 extra mana.  The pool for casting spells is so large just setup Merrill so she is firing off spells continuously, for one hell of a show as she blitzkriegs her way through enemies later in the game!!

Maximise 100% of normal mana pool with sustained spells  i.e.
Blood of the First 70%,
Wrath of the Elvhen 20%,
Rock Armor 10%

Also in setup
If Health > 50% activate Blood of the First
If Health < 50% de-activate Blood of the First
