So I finally got to read Stolen Throne and soething struck when comparing parts of the plot to my playthroughs of Origins. The way you can groom Alistair into giving up his naeivety and becoming a good king is very much similar to Loghain's relationship with Maric in Stolen Throne. Depending on your playing style, you could be just as harsh a man as he was furthering the parralels.

Just something I noticed and wondered if others had.

So everyone who hardened Alistair is fated to become another Loghain?

I approve of this message!

I hardened him, and then never got any messages after hardening him, lol... he just keeps wanting to talk about the Grey Wardens.

I noticed it too. Becoming 'another Loghain', isn't necessarily a bad thing. Loghain was a great man and without him Ferelden wouldn't be free. Just so long as the GW learned from Loghain's mistakes and not be consumed by paranoia and fear.

But the parallels between Alistair and Maric made me feel a lot more happy with putting him on the throne. If you've read both novels, you can see that both of Maric's known children are definatly their father's son. Cailain was a lot like Maric too, so I haven't a doubt he would have been just as great a king as Alistair will be.

Agreed. In reading The Stolen Throne, it struck me how much Alistair was his father's son. They definitely have a shared wit. I'm not so sure about Cailan. He seems to hunger for glory in a way Maric never did.

Since I'd played through the game a couple of times before I read the books, I recognized the event in TST that was Maric's "hardening" for what it was, and what role Loghain played in it. Much, much harsher than what Alistair goes through, but the parallels are there, for sure. Maric is certainly a different person after that event, probably a better king.
