Morning all,

Do you remember when Bioware first started out and the level of RPG they created?

Who remembers Baldurs Gate and BG 2?

Who played through Neverwinter Nights with a variety of character types?

Who remember Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic?

Who blitzed through Jade Empire?

Who remembers ME 1 and DA:O?

Who remembers when ME2 came out and thought the following:
Why can't I pick armour for Sheperd and my team?
Why are there so few weapons to pick up?
What happened to all those weapon mods I could add?
How come I only have about 6 skills I can progress? in ME 1 there were at least twice that many.

I remember thinking the same with DA 2 -
Why can't I be a warrior mage?
Why can't I dual wield as a warrior?
Why can't I customise my companions with armour and a variety of weapons?

Who thought that ME3 would change these missteps when it was said customisation would be back?
What happened to the dialogue wheel?
Why can't I still upgrade the armour for my squad and instead only change the colour and about 2 maybe 3 bonus' that it gives?
Why can I no longer do a bit of exploration while stopping the reapers? (People say that the galaxy is at war but DA:O managed to accomplish this with the dark spawn?)
Why can't the multiplayer upgrades be included in the main game?  I'd love to do a couple of missions around earth (even if it's just defence or seek and destry like the current Mp maps)

I suppose the big question I'm asking is do you think that since EA has taken over this fine firm, has quality dipped for them?  Are we seeing corners being cut in order to hit a deadline?  Are the things which made the games from this firm unique being taken out and 'streamlined' in order to appeal to the COD/GOW crowd?

I feel that the last 'true' Bioware game that I played was DA:O.  ME2 was a great game, but it wasn't a game created by the Bioware that I grew up with.

I appreciate that companies have to change with the times in order to keep going, but there's plenty of demand for RPG's out there so wht did Bioware decide to create 3rd person shooters and hack and slash action RPG's?

TL;DR - Bioware stopped making good RPG's after DA:O and now are starting to become a generic shooter developer plus I resent your TL;DR. BioWare are making generic tactical combat and generic MMO's too. - Taken from Indy_S

QFT x24, and you listed a problem I hated in ME2 and ME3, you can't choose Squadmate's armour.

Well, technically, you can. It's only in ME3 where they start to show any/small benefits.

I preferred the ME2 system to the ME system. At least there was a real difference between the weapons and armors.

I resent your TL;DR. BioWare are making generic tactical combat and generic MMO's too.

While I enjoy a lot of those elements, they aren't what defines an RPG. The term as itself is meaningless. Diablo and Skyrim are both RPG's but they are radically different and again they are both different to The Walking Dead Telltale game, another RPG.

So, while I am missing the more traditional tabletop game elements, I understand their streamlining.

It has some RPG elements but it's really a shooter game. Bioware went down this route due to the MP aspect of the game.

MP was made by a different team as far i was aware and it still is an RPG but a very sreamlined one better in some ways but worse in others

The moment Auto Dialog became the order of the day and Choices no longer mattered....all RP went out the window.

What you would call a decline, some would call an evolution, I guess.

DAO was the last great true RPG they made, I'll agree with that.

(no really that it EXACTLY what I think)

p.s. I haven't played baldurs gate I, II and Jade empire but I played KOTOR, Neverwinter nights 1, ME1,2,3 - obviously, DA:O, DA2

You say decline, others may say a change in direction that you don't like.

I'll admit, I didn't enjoy DA2 and ME3 but they're both games which are only a few steps from being something I'd have a blast playing. I think the next installment whether it be DA3 or ME4 will show where they're really going.

if anything I;d say the Mp and single player are RPG lite, very lite if I'm honest...

Especially if you compare it to what came before

They're streamlining their games to appeal to more gamers (Casual gamers) and get them out more quickly. They don't want to spend as long making a game as they did on DA:O. But the quality of the games has suffered for it. DA2 one of my least favorite games ever, not just Bioware games, and to a lesser extent ME3 have shown the signs of being rushed out.

It's been like going from a mom and pop store where they pay attention to every detail because they need every customer to come back, to a large chain where the customers are just numbers that they count of coming back due to the brand name.

Good point, but when you think about what they had made that was a blast, it's sad that they appear to have taken a step back.

i agree with you incidently, both games had many echoes of greatness but just not realised...

level up system? I thought that in character development there should be a choice, I should have limited number of skill points and I have to decide what to do with limited number of skill points, in ME3 you have so many skill points that it seems like you've been cheating, you can have every skill there is maxed out (except one) this is not a good RPG, no loot no inventory, equipment streamlined well, from what I've seen even rainbow six vegas had more armor customization, than "RPG Mass effect 3" autodialogue take all the character development to hell, this is no longer your shepard but just a protagonist of the game, lack of middle choice in power wheel is a big step down, no exploration, action action action

I used to complain about ME2 for leaving RPG elements, and even when it has less skill trees, it's still way more RPG-like than ME3
ME3 is a action game with a few modifications and a story =]

Action mode devalues the RPG aspect of ME3

And i agree OP, u also could have mentioned DA2/ME3 only having 1 hub which is beyond ridiculous for an expansive universe, EA being involved with bioware shows the dumbing down of they're games... The continue trend of crap DA2/TOR/ME3 shows this mediocre trend.

It's an evolution to some folk, but it's also one for the worse and shows little of the word they love to use " integrity"

EA " do this "
BIOWARE " yes sir "
