Hi all

Just come back from EA help site and let them know that I have finally got Mass Effect to run on Windows 8! :D

I had already tried a previous tip by installing Games For Windows Live, going into the properties, changing it to compatibiliy mode for Windows 7 and then getting Administrators' privelidges.  Unfortunately this did not work for me and the game kept getting stuck on the 'Mass Effect Configuration Utility.

What worked for me was a Mass Effect Patch I found called:- MassEffect_EFIGS_1.01a exe

Here is a link to the site where I got it from.
I hope this works for you too!
Ju.

If this link does not work the update can be found on the BioWare site.

Normally, the failure of the configuration utility is a protective warning. These games exceed the performance capability of the average PC on sale these days, and will shorten the effective lifetime of the hardware. The average PC simply hasn't got either good graphics or good heat dissipation. Gaming PC hardware is made for gaming with, the rest of them are not, so work-arounds are simply a way to overwork the cheap(er) PCs until they fail.

Running a game below minimum specs will mostly just fail or give you a terrible experience with slow gameplay.
CPU and GPU is clocked at a certain speed, because this is the point where they safely can run with 100% workload and still be kept at a tolerable temperature that doesnt damage them.
Yes overclocked and cheap and faulty hardware can fail, but claiming running below minimum specs slowly will kill your PC is just an incorrect statement.
You can of course argue that the CPU/GPU fan running faster will cause more wear and tear, but since most fans are tested to run at 100% for 5+ years and cost like 15$ i don't think that qualifies.

That being said, the OP was talking about a compatibility issue with Mass Effect 1 that happens no matter what hardware you're running, so i got no idea why we got to this.

Alternative fix:

1. Uninstall Windows 8
2. ???
3. Profit

He's talking about the insta-crash when you open the config util or launcher/masseffect.exe for the first time. The assumption of inadequate hardware is way off unless current high end gear is still not good enough for a 2007 game ;).
In addition to the 1.01a patch, theres the 1.02 which you can find on fileplanet, make sure you grab that.

Why would yo do that? Get start8 or something similar and you have a faster and better os than w7, install 1.02 ME patch then you can actually profit. Then again its pretty cool at the moment to not like w8, even if you dont have first hand experience as to why.
