Happy or sad doesn't matter (all the endings of DAO are bittersweet, even the Dark Ritual) but I just would like my character to be a hero at the end. I liked Hawke, but Hawke wasn't a hero, Hawke was just someone who got s**t done.

I didn't find anything bittersweet in DA:O's ending.

The US was bittersweet. The warden sacrificed their self for the greater good, leaving their loved ones behind. It was bitter that the warden had to die, but sweet that their death saved ferelden.

Even more bitter when you had a non hardened Leliana romance with the US ending.
Don't want an ending where it's all unicorns and rainbows. We're apparently in the middle of a mage/templar war, war comes with losses.

Remember that Templar from DA:O who got enslaved by a desire demon at the circle? She tricks him into thinking that he gets a sunshine and lollipops ending? If DA3 ends with that happening to my Inquisitor, it has my vote for GotY.

The "It Was All a Dream" gimmick is the worst one ever and is universally crapped on.  See fan reactions to the TV series Lost.

I don't understand why they can't just make the happy ending AN OPTION.

Like all these people who want sad endings, when given the choices between a good one and a sad one, would probably still choose the best one.

Well, on my first playthrough I plan to roleplay a "good" compassionate hero who'll try to save whoever/whatever could possibly be saved, including himself.

That is why I'm seriously considering reading the ending spoilers before I actually start playing, because if that kind of roleplay style turns out to be for nothing (like ME3 was), then I might as well just play a selfish jerk and be done with it. We'll see.

I think the sudden cut to black (Sopranos) or non-ending (Devil Inside) are worse.

I'd be comfortable with it. Let me try my hand against every problem in the game and make the ending based on how these problems were handled.

I LIKE LOLLIPOPS!

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with a happy ending.

It's the same thing as a downer ending, I don't mind as long as either end of the scale makes sense and was built up throughout the story.

For instance, say what you will about the writing of the Star Wars movies, but I liked the downer endings that Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith and Empire Strikes Back had. I also liked the uplifting happy endings to Return of the Jedi and A New Hope.

I did not however like the downer ending to the anime Gurren Lagann because it was contrived sequence of events that were just thrown in because the writers wanted a sad ending.

My point is that whatever ending happens should feel natural to the tone and feel of the story. Each ending in Origins made sense and had it's desired effect on the players. You could either sacrifice yourself, sacrifice Alistair/Loghain, or find a way for everyone to live by become a deadbeat father.(Except for Riorden, but no one really cares)

Even the ending to DA2 makes sense under this logic. How could the situation in Kirkwall resolve itself in a happy way? Thanks to stupid Anders, everyone was calling out for blood and heads were going to roll. The best that Hawke could hope to do in that situation was end it quickly before many innocent bystanders were killed. That's because the situation of that ending had been built up to and it's tone left little room for a "happy ending".

Still...it would be nice to have the option for a "no strings attached" happy ending as long as it's earned.

A "happy" ending for me, in a setting like Dragon Age, is that the hero is able to resolve the conflict with as little collateral damage possible, but comes out of it with irreparable physical and emotional scars. I like happy endings, but only when I feel that I've earned them.

If there is no cost to the actions of the player, including the end, there's no victory.

And rainbows?

Something like Knights of the Old Republic where you're the big damn hero who's saved everyone without a hint of bittersweet if that's what you're looking for?

Or even something Jade Empire where you can marry the Princess, rule the land, and everyone loves you?

It doesn't have to be a 100% happy, lovely, original Star Wars medal ceremony ending, but yes, some sunshine in our endings isn't really a bad thing. I don't mind having to work and think for that sunshine (Mass Effect 2 style, let's say), but I do mind being force-fed my sunshine with a glass of vinegar (Mass Effect 3).

DAO had a great ending as far as I'm concerned. The archdemon always gets defeated without major collateral damage (eg. you don't have to destroy all dwarves to accomplish it), and the nature of any minor collateral is dependent on your choices leading up to and during the endgame. As it should be.

Not particularly. I don't think there is anything necessarily "wrong" with that type of ending, but it doesn't fit the tone of the setting, at least based on the previous two games. It would feel disjointed, I think.

True.  In that context, that ending was perfect.

I liked the cut to black just that one time.  But that was because I knew right away it was going to make most fans angry and I was kind of a Sopranos snob.  So I didn't mind when David Chase gave everyone the middle finger.  Image IPB

But yeah, that kind of ending would be irritating.

I want all kinds of endings. From the all good, all well (with the princess) to the all bad, all dead (princess dead). And all the shades of gray inbetween. Depending of my choises.

As long as I'm able to control the outcome of the ending, depending upon choices I made within the game I'm happy either way.

What I don't want is another DA2 scenario, in which the story played out the exact-same way regardless of what my character did! No, no no no and no again!

If there's going to be a true 'happy' ending available, then I want to earn it. I want to make the happy ending happen as a result of doing all the required legwork, and making the right choices.

For a 'happy ending' to work, there also has to the potential for failure. I'd like it best if there was a "rock falls, everyone dies" ending at one extreme end of the spectrum (occurs if player made consistently bad decisions, or ignored or skipped certain key content.... with a "good" ending at the other extreme (player makes 100% correct choices, painstakingly completes 100% of content, all side quests etc.). This 'good' ending doesn't have to be rainbows and lollipops, it can be bittersweet, but it should definitely feel rewarding, and provide that emotional satisfaction of a job well done (something sadly lacking from DA2 and ME3)

I want an ending that's well written, is based upon my choices, and offers me a satisfying conclusion. A happy ending is not necessarily all of those things, just as all of those things don't magically make a happy ending.

A "sad," ending that is written well and is the RIGHT ending for a story doesn't stick in the pit of your stomach (at least not in the bad way) as if something's wrong. It is a satisfying conclusion.

Not super happy perhaps but there should be a possibility for everything to be as happy as can be, kinda like DAO.

You could have quite a happy result as long as you made the right decisions, sure not everything was happy but we have to be somewhat realistic. However it's depressing finding out that Shianni gets shanked in the epilouge, creators damn you Bioware, bunch of shems...

I'd like a happy ending sure, but with a tinge of bittersweet. Not "every single little thing works out in the end".

For me, DAO's Dark Ritual Ending was what I'd like out of a happy ending.

It made me feel good, I saved the day, everyone's generally gonna be okay, but goddamn it my love and the mother of my child left me and I'll be damned if I'm not gonna look for her. Morrigan's Ring, the epilogue slides regarding it, all that stuff with her made me HURT. But in a good way.

So something like that.

This this this.

What's so hard in having a sweet, a bittersweet and bitter end? Is it too much to ask for different endings nowadays?

I would like a well crafted and fitting ending that makes sense in the context of the story and setting. That's something we haven't gotten in a while.

If the game ends with the protagonist dying or turning into a dragon or it ends with a cliffhanger involving time travel that would be fine as long as that's where the story was naturally heading.

Because make a 100% happy ending where the hero loses nothing on the way irrevocably makes the other endings worthless one were the hero failed. Of course we would choose the happy one if given the option, not doing so will force us to play a hero who either has a hopeless case of a matyr complex or is just plain stupid.

Anyway, I prefer an organic ending that feels as if it comes as a result of the decesion I made during the game not in a big final choice, that way loses and win doing the journey will feel as part of the ending.

Failing that I want and ending that feels like: This is the end of the story, but lifes goes on.

I'm not a fan of "and everyone lived happily ever after", but I would love to have the option to get a good ending. Not necessarily "sunshine, lollipops and rainbows", but it would be nice if my character and her love interest survived the ordeal, for instance, provided the right decisions had been made. It doesn't have to... no... it probably shouldn't be perfect, but I would very much like the option to have a decent ending, because I want the experience to be rewarding.

Of course, I would like to see various outcomes of our actions and consequently the possibility to have bad and painful endings as well as bittersweet and sweet ones. One more reason to replay the game. I'm pretty much content with how DA:O handles it. I've had endings that were very painful as well as endings that were relatively happy, containing various nuances based of my decisions. Options such as those would be great.

How about different ending from sunshine and lollipops to destruction and death. It should depend on the way you play the game.
