Yes, I have said it. Its about time people just accept that score is the most important factor in determining player skill.

The biggest argument anyone can ever provide as to why score is "meaningless" is because "this game is a co-op"

Let me tell you right now. Its not.

I have never, ever, seen PUGs or friends attempt to make this "co-op" based game actually cooperative.

Here are the "co-op" tactics people use (in no particular order):
1) Camp
- FBWGG, and RioReapersPlatinum. This is about as cooperative as it gets, and its a complete load of pathetic mediocrity. Its neither effective or efficient. Its just a bunch of scared players huddling together in a corner praying that nobody will get stabbed....

But oh, will they get stabbed.

2) "Staying close"
Is this a real tactical strategy? No. Its a "strategy" with a very basic concept: "if we stick together, we have a better chance of living." Doesn't mean **** when a bunch of enemies splits your team up. Then you are just forced to find somewhere else to "stick together." Pretty much, its a "better version" of camping.

AND.....

3) Synchronizing Powers.
This is hilarious. Most of the time when people do this, they pick one or two powers that sync up well, and just spam the crap out of it (ex. Overload and Snap Freeze). This is just silly, as it hardly translates to a strategy outside of "dewd, keep hittin em wit dat snap freeze." This tactic is even better than 1 & 2, because it combines both elements together, but still lacks efficieny the higher the difficulty goes.
And don't get me started on biotics. Most people will just spam their Biotics, and then someone will get greedy and start only using Detonating powers because they want points. Then, all you get is a bunch of Throws hitting an armored atlas... this is hilarious.

The most cooperative gameplay I have seen is strategies used by speedrunners. Its coordinated with each player playing a specific role, standing in a specific spot, moving toward specific areas, and using specific equipment on specific waves. Not only that, but if something "jolts" the strategy, there are back up strategies to compensate. This is Co-Op. Not some BS vague idea of ?working together" until some moron gets greedy

Get it together people. If you want to determine whether or not you are decent at the game, watch the score. If you regularly score 60-90k more than the PUGs in your Gold games... you are probably alright. If you are getting outscored each and every game by that same amount, you are probably not that great.

tl;dr

Face scores with the truth: You are your score

in the end, even if some people don't like to hear that, the score tells you how many eniemies you killed or helped to kill, so also how much you helped your team, honestly it never happened to me to think "that guy who scored 120k didn't help us at all"
the only way to have real teamswork is when you are playing with people you know, playing with unknown is very rare to even get close to it

A nice even spread is where it's at.
Or a decent spread with an infiltrator(other high tier kits) pulling ahead.
Score doesn't account for detonations(especially when all of your stuff gets covered), breaking sync kills, and team synergy. Try staring at your score when you get killed off on your own trying to get more points than the 3 other guys staying together, alive and mowing anything in their path while aggressively moving through the level.
Score isn't everything, but it surely isn't a useless number. And some kits aren't supposed to be high scoring. Run a GI and a Volus together and watch the score spread, everyone contributes in damage(score), but some contribute more support/utility(non-score) than just pure damage.

Score determines player skill?

Better prime all the explosions, and kill everything whittled down to one bar of armor for a point boost, rush spawns with my rocket out (armored compartments so I can do it 8 times), and bla bla bla.

Bad jokes aside, score doesn't matter at all. Medals matter more. As long as my teammates have the silver or gold assist medal, I'm good. If they only have the bronze assist medal with no kill medals backing it up it gets iffy, but I still won't leave the lobby if they're trying their hardest/use equipment/all that jazz.

that's nice; since I usually top the scoreboard, but the simple rub is how score is calculated doesn't even work correctly, so... so much for your conventional wisdom theory

It's a GI's job to score high with damage.
Volus engineer with 10k less than the 3rd player in a Gold match. He shield boosted when everyone needed shields, recon debuffed large groups/bosses, and proxy debuffed / shot everything he saw.
There is your picture. Score mongers can stick to their high damage kits 24/7, the masses would like to have fun while still contributing to the fight in a helpful way with kits they like.

So the wee-little Volus following my slayer around providing me with infinite phase disrupter spam is not helping at all, and since only scores 10-20k, is a bad player? OP is either stupid or trolling.
