Score determines my worth as a human being. If I don't top the scoreboard at the end of a match, I do several things:
Firstly, I immediately ragequit the game.
Secondly, I take time to sit down and think about what direction my life is going, how I can improve my score, and why I got outscored
Finally, if I was severely outscored, I contact my therapist for some counselling and talk to family and friends to try to recover from the trauma.

@ grumpy old wizard - thats why ive always said you should get more points for staying in the hack circle... then see how many people carry running around lol
Better yet, they could fix it so you get no points or assist/kill credits unless you are standing in the hack circle when a hack is going on. Same for pizza delivery.

Sirian, everytime you outscore me, I use the store as an excuse to cry, and think about why I am such a scrub. Then, I leave the store, and prepare to wander through another match aimlessly, hoping I can one day follow in your footsteps. You're my hero.

Yes, I have said it. Its about time people just accept that score is the most important factor in determining player skill.
Actually, quite often having the high score means you suck at as a player. The game is squad based but the "top scorer" often plays selfishly and is a detriment to the squad. I'd rather have a noob in the game who tries to help rather than a kill stealing, non-objective helping player more worried about his score than the success of the squad and timely completion of objectives.
It is time people just accept that some of the elitist snobs who brag about their score utterly suck at the game.
Aside from that the game is poorly balanced with regard to the classes. Some classes are quite overpowered and some quite underpowered.

Who else has a revive medal? I admit, I didn't cap every single objective in the match, but I never ignored one. Don't pretend that I must have been scorewhoring just because I have a high score. You may have only seen people score well by being idiots, but don't insult people who actually try to be a helpful part of the team.
EDIT: Just to be clear, I also think the OP is a ******, but that comment pissed me off.

Quite often, to me, means more than 50% of the times at least. If you see that more than 50% of the times then I'm sorry, I feel your pain. I see someone deliberately not helping on objective wave let's say... Once in 50 pugs I do. That one gets my kick vote as soon as the match ends, and if he doesn't get kicked I leave the lobby.
But you should not judge someone by seeing their score and assuming that they milked objectives and didn't help (not saying you do, just... Precaution, you know).
If I can take myself as an example, I top the score of roughly 99.5% of the PUGs I do, and usually by 100k or so. Does that mean I milk objectives? Definitely not.
Actually, I make a point of only killing things during objective waves if that particular thing is hindering our chance to do the objective. Otherwise, I just run/kite/take aggro/dodge/take cover until the objective is over.
So... In my experience, the one who scores roughly like his teammates combined is usually the best player in that team, by a long shot. Not the worst

Difference is determinated (in points or credits) from the types or number of medals you earn in the game, but once again... score doesn' t mean anything.
If you snap freeze, and you vanguard charge them, to make it explode... you earn the kill, he got the assist, but if the level of "CO OPERATION" is high, score really doesn't mean anything:
"Stick togheter !!" doesn't allow you to be revived faster, it allows you to "FOCUS" on enemies, expecially bosses, FOCUSSES on the missions.
Learn hot to focus in the game, cause most of you (generalization) don't even know how to apply this word in game.
(totally different is if one of your team mates can't hit a single target with the widow, or you use a build with a character, capable os killstealing everything, like the geth infiltrator with the piranha, then it results in a really really different score between you two.)
But once again, score doesn't mean anything, like the N7 level. Accept it.

In my experience, most of the time the guy topping the scoreboard is also the best teamplayer by far.
If that guy who is getting most of the points seems to screwing the team by running off and doing his own thing, it's probably because the team is doing the wrong thing. Sometimes ensuring the success of the mission means leaving your teammates to deal with the results of their tactical errors.
The exception of course is the objective waves, but even that's not always cut and dry. If I'm playing with a weak team and we get a tough hack objective, I sometime will spend the entire hack outside the circle in order to block a spawn. Might look selfish, but this strategy can really ease the strain on teams that otherwise couldn't 'hack' it. *groan*
Similarly, when I'm playing with a weak team and we get devices, instead of trying to do the objectives myself, I try to get as much aggro as I can so that I can try to lead the enemy away from the objectives. Might look selfish but for a team that isn't do a lot of damage it's the best thing.

Soo, the point of OP was that if I get outscored by (+1000hrs) player with lvl X UR's I am a crappy player? I can live with that. Any reason I should care then?
Nope.

Agreed, OP. It is at least the best indicator we have for someone's performance and/or value to a team. Anyone who says otherwise is smoking the good stuff.
