We all hate lag, but I would be even more disappointed if my connection or system isn't good enough to actually be the host.

I've done a speed- and pingtest, but I'm not sure what else is needed. Speed usually is between 80-120, so I took an average result. Same with the pingtest.

e: Added 2 more pingtests.

As far as I remember from others games, it was a decent amount of ram (1GB+, now it's probably more) and at least 1Mb of upload? Or something like that.

I was told that 4 mb on upload make for a pretty good host. But I'm no expert there, so it's just what people told me.

Ping is what's killing a match, normally.

Sometimes it also depends on a connection between certain countries. Russia for example, is many players' worst nightmare, while I always get pretty much perfect playing conditions playing on Russian hosts.

My guess is that you'd be a good host - given the game doesn't throw people from the other side of the planet into your lobby.

The requirements for consistently being a good host are beyond me however - I know that while my ping (~40ms). my download (~12mb/s) and upload (~1mb/s) are rather stable, people tell me that they'll go from perfectly lag-free to teleporting back and forth within the same match.

Mainly depends on the geographical distance to the host, and since you cannot choose the host by location, try to only host when it is prime time for your region (typically beginning of the evening on weekdays).

That's exactly why I'm asking. I'm thinking that most people either don't understand me when I ask, don't have a mic, or just plain ignore me.

Not-terrible internet, and a not-terrible PC if you're on that platform. Otherwise I think it's just luck of the draw in who connects to you or how far away your friends are.

Your ping might be stable, but it's not great. Ideally, it should be half of that, or lower.
OP, you should be good.
My upload is a pathetic 0.4mb/s and most people report none to very little lag. Ping is ~15ms, used to be lower.

Decent connectivity (both in terms of DL/UP speed and ping), a rather good PC and something almost completely out of your control — a good connection to EA/Mass Effect servers. The latter is the reason I rarely host these days =|

I have a 1G fiber optic line and I wonder the same. However, my main problem is I live in Japan, and despite the awesomeness of my connection, traveling an ocean (or 2) to get to someone's computer in the US, Europe or elsewhere cuts down on that advantage immensley.

In the end I think geographical distance is the biggest factor, as the farther you are apart from one another the larger the ping. By this point, most people have computers and connections that are suitable for hosting, it's just a matter of who you are hosting for.

I've asked people I've played with when I was host if they experienced anything weird, they all said no.
So I'm guessing that my net is good enough to host random matches, I have no idea what will happen if I try and join friends.
On CoD MW3 I couldn't for the most part.

No, it's not great, but that wasn't the point. My reasoning was more like: if ping is the dominant factor for lag, then the same people should always  lag if the ping is always bad or should never  suffer from severe lag if the ping is good.

Seing that my ping is stable (i.e. doesn't jump from 10ms to 100ms every few minutes), I just can't explain why you or Sekrev aren't either constantly lagging when I host or constantly getting away without lag.

All of that of course only makes sense as long as you're not moving to another country/continent after each wave.

Yeah, upload really doesn't seem to matter much, you're a rather good host for me.

Its not purely geographic but your right in that it is the biggest factor. Its your ISP connection to other ISPs and backbones. The packet doesn't always take the shortest route eg, your Japan link might go around the world just getting a packet to Korea. Dumb but does happen

As for the original question, Thaxor is right in that most people who purchased the game for PC have the required computing power and connection to host for those in their region. If you lag, get out of the game

Enable bbcode in the standard form and put the link between brackets

Replace parentheses with corresponding brackets (img)link(/img)

Location is more important than anything.

For Europeans you'll be a great host. For 'murricans you'll be a decent host (probably 150 - 200 ms for them).

For me, it'd be the usual 350 - 450 ms from Aus to Europe.

As long as your upload is over 0.5mb/s you shouldn't have any trouble hosting.

Ping should be stable if not low. No packet loss. Can you run ME3 at 60FPS? Is your processor over 3 or 4 years olds?

Try running ping tests to servers on other continents such as central NA and AU.

Not sure really.
I host all the time and I only lag some of the time.
Can't make heads nor tails of my speed test results though.

Ah, another thing to test, then. I believe pingtest will let you choose a server.

Even with good host, theres still the problem of invisble enemies and folks not able to load properly.
