If there can only be one mage warden at a time.why is the mage warden allowed to recruit Anders?

Wardens also can't get involved with politics, and yet you choose the next monarch for two kingdoms (Orzammar and Ferelden) and can theoretically crown a Warden or two to rule one of those kingdoms (Alistair and/or Human Noble), so I think the rules are lax given the times.

Try recruiting him and see what happens.

As usual, Wynne is pontificating about something she knows jack all about.

When does Wynne say this?

I heard various characters say the same thing in the Mage Origin, and Wynne wasn't even there for it.

It isn't Wynne who says this, it's some random dude cleaning Duncan's guest room in the tower. I think the continuity team was asleep for some dialogues, keeping things they may have intended originally, but should have removed (or revised). Or maybe that guy is acting on erroneous or out of date information.

Certainly the wardens can have more than one mage, as during Legacy Hawke's sister (a mage) can be present at the same time janeka is.

And no one balked when my Surana conscripted Anders from under the nose of that nasty templar woman, except the templar but her objection to it was that he was a 'murderous apostate' not 'no, you can only have one mage in your ranks'.

You can also recruit Valanna (another mage) too that game.

Wynne says it in the (cut) blood mage confrontation.

Interesting, I don't remember hearing it in the Circle. So it seems there is some background for it even though it makes no sense. I recall Duncan saying something about wanting at least one mage in every company but would they really turn down more than that? "No, I don't want a one-woman army, got enough thanks."

Maybe it was a compromise forced on them by the Chantry.

It probably has more to do with the (Ferelden) templars not wanting to give up too many mages at a time than to any rule against more than one mage with the Grey Wardens at any time. Duncan mentions in the Mage Origin (if you talk to him) that he thinks the Wardens should have more mages since their magic is so useful, but the templars won't allow it. As it is, getting them to allow a small handful of mages to go out and fight against darkspawn for the king at Ostagar was like pulling teeth from a live crocodile.

Fae,she says it in the tower when you use blood magic.
I think you need a mod to restore the scene though, because they cut it.

Oh, a scene that was cut from the game? Well, silly me for not knowing about it.

You think the scene being cut might affect her statement being canon or not?

I'm going with this. Seems a reasonable way to salvage the situation. The templars want to limit the number of mage wardens in peace time, but when Blights arise, the rules slacken somewhat.

Seems a serviceable patch to bandage over a writing oversight.

Do you have the wiki page?

To give some food for thought, Zevran was supposed to try to kill the Warden twice before being knocked out and killed/released/recruited, but the developers dropped it to one encounter. Even though a few characters like Alistair say that Zevran tried to kill the Warden twice, he only tries it once in-game. Developers change their minds during production. Do we go with what was supposed to be there or what shows up in the final game?
