Fantastic game all around, final encounter made me squee as I mashed me L and R buttons. Lara was also awesome, Loved how at the end oft he game she looks like she went through hell and back, the devs didn't treat her special because she was a female character, she got it rough like a normal survivor and the love showed. Certain companies(won't say who ;P) Should look at Lara and use her as a template on how you build a female hero in gaming,

They wont sexualize her now and if they do it for sales because of this recent news then that is troubling indeed. I wish females in general liked to game more (like me XD) and that the gaming industry didn't always market their products to so many male nerds.
Idk I still think she was sexualized to a degree. Seriously... did you see the same camera angles as me when she was climbing that radio tower?

As long as her body stayst he same size and the camera angles don;'t go too crazy I'm fine. I know what you're talknig about Leni, biggest example was after she get's free int hat body area and one hwole cave part is oyu looking at her behind. A nice view and all, but I can understand why someone would roll their eeys at it.Lenimph wrote...

Moments I was commenting sound like this (Beware of spoilers!). Her usual tone is closer to this and when she screams or shouts, her voice becomes more high-pitched like this. I'm familiar with these 20-something year old voices - First Second. It sounds immature for LC's age and stiff like a girl practicing a screen play on school stage and unsure how to yell at audience.
Err ok but yeah... a womans voice does tend to get higher and crack when she is screaming and again I don't think Lara's pitch change is as severe as you want to make it seem to be.

I don't argue the reality that woman's raised voice gets considerably higher pitch. I do disagree that her performance is normal for 21 years old young woman. At least not in my experience and that's why it broke my immersion together with improper intonation change. But hey, I'm not in my early twenties and I don't live with girls of such age anymore to test it, so I'm fine to agree to disagree.Lenimph wrote...

Me too. I'm usually irritated by camera voyeurism but it was okay here. It was impossible to not notice it in the cave but it was used reasonably. I mean where else should the camera be? I needed to climb up and I needed to see what is in the front of Lara.Mr.House wrote...

(I'd most probably take heed of such reviews: http://www.metacritic.com/user/jpalomo - what do you guys think about it?)
Edit: Even a 10-star review states it's an 6-hour long game. Wow...

For example, Uncharted is one. It is highly cinematic corridor which artificially put obstacles past you, so you enjoy the experience at a steady rate without looking back. TR basically keeps expanding the map, so you can almost always return to any location by foot or use fast travel. It uses QTE certainly less than AC. AC's fight is a series of QTE events. TR uses long shot guns without auto-aim and QTE occurs only with close-range fights. Situation: An enemy is close, you dodge him and then you have a chance to QTE assault. Otherwise you can run away and shoot him or dodge him again.
There really aren't many tombs, around five or six.
Cut-scenes occur a lot in the beginning, later it felt natural and used adequately. I mean if you don't expect Half Life 2 style of "cut-scenes". You choose where to go and who and how to fight. Boss battles are usually a regular fight (aim, shoot and hit or miss) with QTE finishers.
I think of Tomb Raider as a mix of Uncharted and Assassin's Creed.
I finished the game in 21 hours but I collected a lot. So I would say 10-12 hours average if you don't do speedrun and don't search for collectibles.

The main thing bothering me from the trailer is that it's an "origin story" (a device or script type really cliched in cinematography, and of little relevance to gaming), the main character is all teary-eyed and "wants to save her friends" and all that. Besides, they don't show any gameplay, only cutscenes. So I kinda allowed myself to conclude the direction is overall TV-like. If that makes any sense...
But yeah, your comment was helpful. Actually, I'm not a big fan of "let's make a game as long as we can", but for a Tomb Raider game it seems kinda necessary.
Maybe I'm holding on to the past games too much.
edit: Oh, and I haven't played Uncharted + I dislike the AC series...
edit: yet the 10 hours seems certainly more ok than this.

I got same impression from trailers as you. Lara isn't teary-eyed like it was popular to show in PR material and there is an actual gameplay. There is some MP demo on YouTube. It shows how SP combat works but SP doesn't contain hordes of enemies like MP. This shows usual gameplay (climbing, moving) and this shows combat (the player uses pistol a lot, at that point you can use also a bow or rifle). A bow is popular a lot because it allows you to plan your attacks and kill enemies silently.
* The game uses them to move story not play itself for you. It doesn't throw you into a cave and let you make the story up.

SP replay value is zero as far as I can tell?
Can you do challenges in SP?

I don't replay games, so I can't tell. It has one story, not story branches like Mass Effect.
Yes, there are challenges in the form of finding something in environment. They are triggered by first discovery. And by the way, if you search for ancient collectibles, Lara'll always comments on them to add some backstory.

Anyway, what is this I hear about Tomb Raider selling only 3.4 million copies and still being considered a failure? That's just absurd!!!

Honestly, 3.4 million doesn't sound like alot to me for some reason lol
For its first month, it sounds pretty successful to me. I remember reading that this doesn't even take into account digital sales. The budget for games these days is ridiculous. They really need to know how to spend within their means and not splurge recklessly.

Less money would have been spent if there was no useless MP component. Really, who cares that TR has MP?
Not only that, they ended up spending far more on marketing to make up for the delayed release that MP caused.

when a game sells 3.4 million copies and is still considered a fail, then there are some serious pondering to be done regarding the coporate structure. I mean, Dark Souls sold less than 2 mil, demon souls less than 1 mil and the producers seem very happy with both. i mean, where did all those money go?!
