Lara's character was really well done. I really like how she (and the narrative in general) progresses as the story goes on. Similar to Spec Ops: The Line, I found it satisfying to hear the taunts (and even Lara's barks) to progress.
It's a very, very pretty game too, which doesn't hurt. And I only played at default settings.
I know some may not have liked it, but I also appreciated how generous the game was for things like jumping onto balance, or grabbing ledges. It meant Lara could defy gravity, but it also meant I wasn't fighting the controls in any sort of "oops, you weren't quite running straight enough into that ledge as you jumped into it, so you die. I can understand some may not have found this as appealing, but eh.
The head nod to classic Lara at the end also lead to huge grins on my face.
RPG mechanics almost always make me like a game more (i.e. NOLF 2, or heck even Gran Turismo), even if I did have to laugh at Lara putting MacGyver to shame hehe.
I liked how gritty and believable her character was. She takes a beating in that game and doesn't exactly feel like a god. She always feels vulnerable and I felt really bad for her at times. The game is quite graphic from a violence standpoint. Almost to a disturbing level based on some death animations. I found that as a big shock because the previous TR games were much like Uncharted in the teen rating. I also liked that they didn't seem to oversexualize her like the previous TR games. It's my favorite game this year so far.

While I didn't mind the story, I do have a criticism, or perhaps more accurately a regret, regarding Lara's character. As the game progresses and she essentially becomes a hardened killer, Lara has these moments when you think the experience has fundamentally changed her, perhaps for the worse. Moments like the Apocalyse Now-like rising out of the blood, like when she, as you say, yells to enemies that she's going to kill them all, when in response to the accusation that anyone close to her dies she glares and responds, "better keep your distance, then." I kept hoping that the story would commit to this storyline of Lara's isolation where her experiences have turned her into this solitary killer now excited by tombs and thrilled by combat.
Instead by the end of the game, she's a total badass who's still actually a pretty normal girl, personality-wise. She holds hands with Sam, she's compassionate, righteous, gives Alex a kiss on the cheek, etc. I feel like the story cheated by having her benefit from all the positives of becoming a hardened Tomb Raider while granting her immunity to any side effects or flaws. I felt it would have been a more interesting story if by the end of the game she was unable to relate to Sam, having been fundamentally changed by the island.
In some sense this was never in play since "Lara Croft" is more than just a character in this game, but I would have found it a much more compelling character arc.

Agreed. I really loved that scene at the end. All around a great game for sure and probably one of the best action adventure games I've played in a while.Allan Schumacher wrote...

Only thing I would have changed was that the tombs were too short and too easy, they were almost like throwaways. Other than that I thought the game was great.
The DLC tomb was a robbery, criminal, it's rare that I say something wasn't worth $3, but I won't let that spoil the game.

I figure it's probably a level you can complete in ten minutes or so, like every other tomb.

i just beat this new one last night.I love the game.to me its an 8.7, few issues reguarding AI.along with the fact the Tomb Puzzles where to Fricking EASY.serious a coma patient could have gotten past them.the mythological and supernatural element came too late into the game for be, but i realize why the did that.combat was fun and easy to get down for the most part.platforming was smooth and fun.overal the game is a soild 9.im just picky
if anther game is made to this style.im going to play hopefully the puzzles will be grander.

Finished it last night. Hopefully I didn't manage to make Lara super weird..
Your painting skills are impressive but...that doesn't look like Lara Croft.
Maybe her long lost cousin?

I was thinking that it kinda looks like Nathan Drake trying to cosplay as Lara Croft.
And that shark in the background is feckin terrifying.

Right from the outset, notice that Lara is way more believable, and isn't running around with huge bazongas.

For example, its a radical departure if you felt the games were all about Lara trying to find something for personal gain or whatever else, as this is purely a survival story. If you felt the old games were all about Lara being a powerful character, this one is different in that Lara is vulnerable as hell(at first).
You just have to play the game and decide for yourself.
