Sega wanted to go next gen and focus got put onto the Wii U version which is being ported to Xbox 720 and PS4 to give game longevity and allow for sequels. At some point they saw they needed the current gen version so it got pulled from the can and pretty much released as is.

.

If such rumor actually exists, I'm betting three dollah it was created by either Gearbox or Nintendo;p
WiiU is approx as much next gen as PS3.

Not sure about validity too much speculation online at moment. But one that is 100% verified true is that the trailer which was released showing gameplay was actually neither console or PC version but a view of the still in production Wii U version. And as if it wasn't complicated enough that is being made by Demiurge studios.

I know Wii U isn't really next gen more like this gen with some things slightly better. Maybe it's just easier to develop a PS4 version dumb it down to Wii U level than fix the problems associated with it on current gen consoles.

So what exactly was so bad with this game? All I've been hearing about have been bugs.

Anyways, I'm hoping Sega will ask Obsidian to pick the Aliens RPG back up now that Colonial Marines has been a failure for them.

I hope not, somehow I'm sure Sega had a part in this. Why in the world, they are allowed to publish games that have to do with the aliens franchise is beyond me. I haven't seen a good Sega game in years. I think FOX should go to another publisher and one that isn't as bad or worse than them because we all know that there's those special fellows.

Binary Domain, Vanquish, Bayonetta, Condemned: Criminal Origins just to name a few games they did that I thought were good.

That's alright and everything but out of all those I think the only one that got big was Bayonetta. I maybe wrong though, I don't like any of those and I still think that SEGA isn't the best publisher for Aliens. If it were up to me I'd give it to someone else with more capability.

Dunno if anyone else would be better...EA would milk it to death and make people buy it piecemeal with microtrans, Activision would make it yearly and put out the same thing with minor changes, Petroglyph probably doesn't have the cash, Blizzard would take an eternity and a half and Ubisoft would slap so much DRM on there nobody would want to play it even if it were great.  <_<

Bethesda could probably do it...but animations might take a hit.  Maybe 2k/Take Two...

I'm sure someone could get the job done right, maybe not the first three but I'm sure there are publishers that can do an even better job than SEGA. The same goes for Gearbox, I mean there's a large amount of developers that could have made this game great and they went with Gearbox, which only has Borderlands to its credit which isn't even that great IMO.

Borderlands, the entire Brothers in Arms series, Halo CE for PC.

I don't know who'd do a better job myself, the Aliens series has such huge shoes to fill that I doubt the public at large would accept any offering from any person.  Expectations are just too high all around.

I don't know about those games, I have heard that they weren't so great, at least Brothers In Arms' latest version didn't go that well but that was a long time ago. In the end it is all irrelevant, they already screwed up, there's not much than can be done. I am sure someone could have done better, there is always someone that can do better.

AvP 1 was developed by Rebellion...who also did that 2010 AvP.  That one wasn't so good.
AvP 2 was done by Monolith.  Hmm, after Condemned 2 and Fear 2 I don't know if they still have that magic.

If it weren't for the Total War games, Sega could go to Hell.

Erm, the Total War games are massive (especially Shogun 2 in terms of sales), they also happen to mosty be pretty good imo - put it this way the publisher has somehow allowed them to become very successful without taking a gigantic steaming **** on the head of the franchise which frankly stands out for a publisher of AAA games.

If everything we have read is true, this is the reward they get - and gearbox has just stung the only publisher out there that just lets a good developer get on with it... for a good 50 million dollars if not more. We as gamers lose out when this sort of thing happens.

Also, gearbox have been excellent at FPS for a long time (opfor!) and it seems likely that they had even remotely directed any effort or focus at this game it would have hit every important note just right (I could say the same about dnf tbh).

I think one thing seems clear - you just can't trust that name to mean they have.

I've been playing Total War games since Shogun 1 and they are awesome! They've always improved on the predecessor. With the slight exception of Empire and Napoleon, which Empire while a bold attempt, didn't quite work out.

Didn't they also get The Dawnof War and Company of Heroes RTS's from THQ and Relic? If they did letting Creative Assembly loose with them would be great!

I think the main fault here is that Gearbox half arsed it (Aliens) and pushed it to the side in favour of Borderlands 2. Because I look at that and the DLC for it and number 1 and think....WTF happend here. Massive game, few bugs, fun co-op, great characters, unique art design, fun quests. Then see what's going on with A:CM and I shout "ERMAGOD! Get it away!!!" :P

Lol, I bet Sega are wishing they never cancelled Obsidian's Aliens Action RPG now.

But can someone actually tell me what's wrong with this new Aliens game? I haven't seen much of it but from what I can tell, it seems to be another one of those super AAAction shooter games that usually find a large enough mainstream audience who gobble it up with glee.

I mean, is the issue with the AI or technical glitches, is it with the atmosphere, or is it "dumbed down", or what?

Shooter fans hate it because it's unfun and linear.
Alien fans hate it because there's a lack of atmosphere that made the series great and makes the xenos feel more like space insects rather than an actual threat.

Both hate it because of technical glitches, the lies between the E3 "gameplay demo" and the finished product, the fact that the game is easier to beat by simply having the player sprint through everything and the horrible maneuvering of the xenos making them feel more humorous than terrifying.

It's mostly the disappointment and lies which drive the angst, however.

Ofcourse these are rumours still but if it turns out too have a core of truth in it Gearbox could be in real trouble. I'm sure Sega will do an audit too see what went wrong with the development of this game especially considering the rumoured 40-50 million budget they allocated too this game. If it in fact turns out Gearbox actually had the audacity too relocate funds from A:CM towards the development of Borderlands 2 Sega could sue them into oblivion. Not too mention the reputation damage they will receive in the eyes of other publishers.

These are tough times for Gearbox and it will take a miracle for them too get out unscathed.
