Romances I'd like to see in DA:I

Jaheira
Viconia
Aerie

You know, start at an actual courtship, proceed into a romance, and in a few cases wind up with the death of a lover or have babies and white picket fence thing. Also, these three particular targets of romantic interest had their own baggage. Jaheira was a widow, Viconia was a victim of racial persecution, and Aerie had her trauma from her capture and severing of her wings.

What I'm trying to say here, is that I don't expect these 3 characters in DA:I or anything, but that these 3 romances were original, expansive, and out of the box. I'd like to see romances in DA:I where the PC woos a potential lover away from their husband/wife. I'd like to see a relationship where the PC isn't the dominant one, or even a relationship where the PC's lover leaves him/her for another companion in the group and the fallout that follows.

I don't want to see cookie-cutter ego stroking video game romances that I've been seeing in games recently.

@ Blackrising what the point of romance? It doubt that my LI will give me Gorechild or Gorefather or both as a gift for anniversary of our relationships. Bonuses? They are the same as for being "friend". Ok sex scene and then... nothing. No new dilaogues, no situation appraisal. You can't even just talk with them... about the weather for example.

Romances are hollow.

Unlike Skyrim romances on DA do not give you daily gold and food buffs. Which is the only reason I "married" in Skyrim, that and to be able to go to the no gold limit store in Riverwood without having to talk to that annoying sister of the trader every fracking time.

If that is all you get from romances, then this thread is not really for you. Since you are curious I'll try to explain:

I like roleplay games for the ability to play roles and the role of male or female in a budding romance is fun for me. Is not the only thing trhat is fun I like the depth of conversations with companions, the scenery, the graphics, the music. None of those things give me game stats or game gold yet I would not play a game without them.

In game romance is a relatively new thing and to date very few companies do it well so for now it is understandable how people who never had it on a game don't care about it and are curious about people who do.

But so was great music and 3D graphics. Hardcore gamers didn't need no 3D pretty things, and if you said you liked better graphics you were not a "true gamer". Yet I bet few here want to go back to gen 1 games :P

Then that's your opinion and that's fine. It's obviously up to you to decide whether you like the romances or not.
Personally, I'm a die-hard romantic at heart.
I just find it strange that some people complain about how we romance-lovers always have 'pixel sex' on our minds when in most romance threads no one even mentions or cares about it.

You're just not romancing the right person. I hear Khârn is a pretty cool guy.

yeah it is tbh m8, for all the games offer "who to bang next" seems to be in the forefront of most of there minds, that makes me /cry

How dare people care about a gameplay mechanic that I don't like!

Let me ask, what exactly did you expect to find on a forum devoted to discussing a game? The people who play Dragon Age 2 and don't care about romances are nowhere near as likely to post here because they're not lore-crazed completionists who want to discuss every single aspect of the game in depth.

People care about romance in Dragon Age because they care about the characters. If they didn't, they likely wouldn't be wasting their time here in the first place.

I mean seriously.. If I make a thread crying about the game having a soundtrack / theme song, will we get this much hate ?

Yet on the age before PS2 if you wanted good graphics or good sound, you were not a serious gamers and all the hardcores would wail at the though someone would - gasp - enjoy seeing a face on a npc

Khârn is a cool guy, especially when you roll a one, but our relationships are strictly professional.

And what person is right one to romance in bioware games? I doubt we will have yet another cynical biach like Morrigan. Not to mention situation insight she provide.

There is no "right" person to romance. If you enjoy the plot twists and rp'ing romance, then you will probably have several playthroughs and might romance different people according to your current PC.

oh i enjoy the plot. but it have nothing to do with romancing. Anders will blow Chantry up no matter is he a friend or LI. You can't change that. There is no twists for romances, romances can't alter the plot.

You mean you can't get crowned Queen in DAO because you married the king ? I could swear I did that ;)

Tbh though I am perfectly fine with romances having a less direct result on the main plot. We end the blight and we kill the Arishok but who is on our bed at night matters not in the grand scheme of things. It adds flavor to the game - for some people, myself included - but it is not the main course.

And if you havent realized that DA2 was all about showing us how the mage / templar war started, then you will be very frustrated with the game. Someone would start that war, no matter what, LIs or not, Hawke or not. We just got the front row seat to see how things evolved.

PS: Perhaps you misinterpreted my "plot twists" comment regarding romances. I meant minor plot twists such as Fenris leaving or Anders moving in, and the pep talks by Varric and Isabella. Those are fun for me, I enjoy that aspect of the RP even though they are not about saving Thedas or killing badies

Maybe i did just fine with my definition of the word plot. And you misused it? Romance is a branch from the main story, and this branch is deadend. The value of this branch depends on what value you personally give it. Simple as that.

I too would like to see Tallis again, LI or not. For me the romances in games have more to do with RP than anything else. I like my stories as detailed as possible. Even in games where I cannot romance someone, I sometimes imagine that a romance is there. In ME1 for example. My Shepard had a huge crush on Garrus. It was beyond amazing to have it actually be a reality in the 2nd game. Anyway, I just wanted to say that those of us interested in romances are not necessarily looking for scenes of rendezvous. Some of us simply enjoy the added elements it brings to the story.

I don't think anyone on the "Romance" threads really thinks this. Most of us know Bioware is busy writing a fun main plot for us and we wouldn't presume to tell BW how to do it's job.

Hence we prefer to suggest stuff for minor plot branches, because those things may not have occurred to BW writers, or they may have but may have been put aside. We hope to show that a lot of us like those aspects of the game so please add more and don't cut our favorite (minor) stuff from the game.

Player driven romances get a bad rep nowadays because they are a relatively new addition to videogames and very few titles do it. Fewer still do it well.

No one has ever said Aeris / Cloud romance spoiled FF7 and please take away any romance from RPGs. Yet make your PC be able to decide wether or not to romance "Aeris" or someone else and - gasp - the game is now a scary thing that needs to be stamped down, lest it fill the game with cooties.

Is irrational but understandable. Is something new and unexpected and looks "girly" so some people need to make sure they voice their distaste for it and their fear of "those people" who find it fun. The new is always scary to some, and liking girly things can make you vulnerable to being teased or picked upon. So "Rawwwwrr.. Hulk no like romace!" is the fad nowadays ;)

@ Renmiri1 so i can hope that BW will allow me to exploit a trauma that Cullen have? Because i really hope so, this ME kind of interaction with npc is rather frustrating.

@DaneWolf really? really? really. BW never let you down with storyline and characters? You are blessed.

Well we know that one of the characters in the game is an Elven rogue... So she's by all logic she's going to be a romance option and since she's an elf she's going to be the bisexual female of the group. Pro Tip.

Hey I hate ME3 as much as you I bet but in fairness to it, we could exploit and examine traumas very well in ME2, Jack, Jacob, Thane, Miranda... Same for ME1
