Well I recently created a warrior archer. His only non-archer skills is shield bash and shield pummel but that was to aid him in the Fade (which he got through OK).
While I know a rogue archer is generally more powerful, I didn't want to be a bad rogue, good archer, or good rogue, bad archer, or so-so in both trees. And I didn't want two rogues in the group either. So instead, was a warrior, as this let me max the archer tree by level 13.
The most suprising thing about this build is how deadly he is to mages..many mages, especially in the Andraste Cult area, were one-shotted by arrows of slaying. That made the encounters much easier and as a result I didn't have to reload this segment, which is not unusual for me to have to. He's turning into a more powerful mage killer than Alistair ever was for me, even when Alistair is decked out in the best anti-mage equipment.
My party is Alistair, warrior-archer (PC), Zevram and Wynne. Alistair and Zevram get into melee while my PC bows and Wynne supports (and a great job she does with that too). Wynne had no mob control (sleep, etc.), so the one-shot of the mages has been extremely helpful.
This group also took down the High Dragon with no deaths. We did have a few warmth balms, which were used when needed. I'm finding more and more the true game vs. this dragon is positioning. Whenever the dragon changes position, I move Wynne and my archers away and move Alistair to engage. As long as I did this, the going was sure, if a bit slow. FF was vital as usual, which I used whenever Alistair gets grabbed, and once my PC, guess the High Dragon didn't like the destruction from afar being put on the dragon. Zevram used a bow entire time, I needed to disable all his combat tactics to keep him at range. I did have him use the mark of death, to help the archery business. He did use a few grenades during the battle too.
Anyways, my PC is doing great help for the party. A number of otherwise hard encounters have been rendered simple by having a powerful archer in the group, which was suprising.
I'm playing on Normal difficulty - we nearly didn't survive vs. the human leader with Faith's Edge group (two dead, one dead/resurrected mid-battle), so it seems tough enough for me.
Arrow of Slaying - wow!

Archers are mage-bane once they get arrow of slaying, particularly as bow talents have long range but spells do not. Well, except arcane bolt, which hardly counts.
Leliana and Shale can easily take down the High Dragon by themselves, probably without needing any healing. Shale with Stone Roar and nature crystals keeps the aggro, regenerates health and can't be grabbed. Leli with her personal bow dishes the damage. Anything the Warden and other party member do is just a bonus.

If you have only one person meleeing the beastie, 'tis best to control them manually and keep them behind the dragon.
