Is there any practical task for a desktop PC or even a high end gaming rig that requires overclocking to such a degree that you need water cooling?

I can play Crysis at maximum settings at 1920x1600 without having to resort to anything remotely that fancy.

If a studio wants to be able to sell a game, it will have to run on the xbox, which is 7 or 8 years old by now, so nothing out there that I'm aware of really taxes a 2013 CPU and video card...

In actuality, no typical gamer needs watercooling. However, cooler components does equate to a longer life for the part. As for practical purposes - program compiling, graphical work, video editing/rendering, minecraft, creating archives (ZIP .RAR), etc.
Personally, I enjoy a CPU that never gets above 52C (even after hours of near-100% load).

How do you like the RAT 7? I was looking at the RAT 3 but so many people had conflicting reviews regarding its build quality. I'm planning to order a CM Storm Spawn (far left) Image IPB

I had an MX518 and now G400 (same thing) but they are both too big for me, I prefer a claw/finger grip.

The RAT 7's really great.  It has a really nice, easily grippable finish (I do believe it is referred to as "matte" thus not slippery).  Also has interchangeable thumb, pinky, and palm grips as well as removeable weights (up to 30g) so if you have a larger hand (as I do) it's far more comfortable to utilize for extended periods of time.  However, having said that, it is also a mouse that can work for a smaller hand considering all of the customization.  The whole mouse is pretty damn customizable.  If DPI is important to you the RAT 7 can muster up to 6400.  I don't use anywhere close to that...tried and ended up aiming all over the place at the slightest twitch.  It's also completely wired...I prefer it as it means I don't have to worry about battery usage or connection issues.

It also has programmable buttons, macros, and such with an easy to install and use program that can all be adjusted while playing (if need be).

All in all (for my first ever purely gaming mouse) I'm incredibly satisfied so far with it and would recommend it.  There honestly isn't anything I could complain about...

The rat 7 uses the phillips twin eye sensor which isn't really the best sensor. So unfortunate as I would have loved the ergonomics and andjustability of the mouse. You could try googling for problems with this sensor. FPS players tend to avoid them.

Also just read that you were planning on the spawn. Has the best sensor of all of them. Not expensive as well.

Hehe, totally the other way around for me. Console controlls feel so inexact and clumsy.

I am 29 years old and have been playing console since I was 3 or 4. To me its just a natural way of gaming. The mouse is cool and I get the mouse aspect of it its the keyboard that always throws me off.

Hmm, I guess I can see what you mean. See, for me it's the other way around - raised on a keyboard/mouse, hardlly use a controller.

no, there is not any actual need aside the fact that I really like having a very powerful pc, build it myself and tune it to get the very best out of it while still being whisper quiet (and like Johny1616 I enjou a graphics card that never gets over 46° even at max overclock XD)
other than that you can have a top of the line pc with a healty overclock completely cooled on air
also you don't even need a pc so powerfull to "just play games" after all you can run pretty  much anything on a core 2 duo and an nvidia 8800 GTX, what people don't get is that you don't need the latest and most expensive tecnology to have the ability to play most games, the ones who spend a lot of money every two years to keep their systems up to date do that because they WANT to, not because there is an actual need

I must be the only nerd here. Got the side off my tower, cable management? WTF is that. HD enclosures? I got two laying on the bottom. Only way I could get over a few terrabytes in there without ordering a new case. I think there are like 2 screws holding the mobo in. Ahhh, Beauty.

Yeah I'd agree that there really isn't anything that "requires" overclocking & watercooling. But it's the same reasoning that people buy the fancy controllers for xbox vs the regular stock ones. You don't really "need" the fancy controller to play.

Reasons for overclocking are many... I think a lot of people on this thread use their machines for more than just gaming, so the overclock may help them do something else in the background without affecting gameplay or maybe finish a task quicker so they can get back to gaming :) Personally, I use mine for freelance work primarily so the latter is my reason...

If you want/need more performance you really have 2 choices... overclock what you have or buy something faster. For those on a strict budget, overclocking is the cheapest way to get more performance. Or even if you buy top of the line stuff, you can always squeeze out even more performance to maximize your money.

As far as water cooling, in general you can get lower temps with less noise. Some of the really high-end air coolers will get you close to water, but thats the exception. Water cooling helps not only with that 5Ghz towering inferno computer, but also even "normal" computers just be a little quieter.

If only I had a camera, I would share.

Buuuuut my case is a Thermaltake MSI-Commander Epic Edition. I have front and bottom red LED 120mm intake fans, side and back red LED 120mm exhaust fans (side one being over my overclocked Radeon HD 7870s in Crossfire), two slim 120mm top fans mounted above my Hyper 212 EVO (one intake onto the front of it, one exhaust above / behind it), three 40mm fans mounted in a 5.25" bay (feeding air to the Hyper 212 from the front), and two CM Excalibur 120mm fans on the Hyper 212 EVO. All running very silent, on lowest settings, thanks to a fan speed controller.

The fans keep my i5-3570k running at around 72C with a Prime95 torture test, overclocked at 4.5GHz. That's while remaining silent.

Have a dvd drive, two Velociraptor 300GB 10,000 RPM hard drives in RAID0, and a SanDisk ReadyCache SSD, so a total of 6 cables between those 4.

There is a wireless adapter sticking out of the back of the case, as well as a wired connection.

Also have a 2m red LED strip running around the edges, inside the case, which requires a 4-pin power connector. I know, it's a Christmas tree. I regret nothing.

All of this while remaining very clean in the case, thanks to wire ties and wire tie mounts, as well as tucking cables into hidden areas of the case.

But most importantly, I have this sticker on the top of the case, in red.

As for my actual desk, I have a black glass L-shaped corner desk with a Razer Anansi / Razer Naga, 21.5" 1080p monitor (small for 1080p, but the pixel density is great), Genius SW-G2.1 1250 speakers (subwoofer under desk), and a red/black gooseneck mic.

Oh, and a mesh pencil cup. Yeeeeah.

And my desktop layout on Windows 8:

Hidden utility bar that pops up when highlighted...
<snip>
Fancy zoom effect...
<snip>

The old style Start menu when the white window is clicked...
<snip>

And my Windows 8 metro interface when the blue window is clicked, or the windows key is pressed...
Bigger versions:

Really pretty! How are you like Windows 8? My brothers told me I should skip it because it was more oriented toward touch vs traditional interface.

The G9X = everything I ever could have wanted in a mouse (except maybe ONE more thumb button...but I didn't like the feel of the Naga Hex ): )  Also, if you don't mind cheese CoD branding, you can get it for half price here: http://www.amazon.co...y/dp/B005S0KHIC That's what I got, and I can assure that the half price version has amazing build quality too.  I have a claw grip (I had been gaming with a tinyass wireless Gigabyte laptop mouse....comfy grip, but very small).  The "skinny grip" on the G9 X = perfect (:

Same here, however, I made the switch to PC about two years ago and now whenever I play my PS3 the controller feels super awkward. I did play some games on PC when I was a kid (Diablo and before that the old school Wheel of Fortune). but it was pretty much all consoles for me.

Funny, when you first started the thread I was going to ask what kind of desk that was. It has a lot of nifty storage compartments and such. If you look back at my desk, it's very small with no storage. I really can't stand it.

I do that too, actually, not anymore. There was a time when my GTP (no hot rod) was pretty damn sexy outside and under the hood. Nowadays, not so much.

But I do still go to the car shows in the summer to look at other cars. ;)
