Hello. I was hoping that someone could help me figure out which graphics settings would be best for my laptop (lenovo IdeaPad Y570). It has Nvidia's Optimus technology (protip: it sucks), so most games only detect the lousy integrated Intel chip (Intel HD 3000) and the settings are on low by default. Here are my specs:

Intel i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz (2 physical processors, 4 logical processors)
4 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GT 555M with 1024MB GDDR5 memory
5400 RPM HDD
Windows 7 64-bit
Native resolution is 1366x768

The game runs smoothly on all the settings I've fiddled with, but I'm not sure which would be healthiest for my machine. Basically: low, medium, high, or very high? Any help would be much appreciated.

Should be able to run at Native no problem. I mean, with a 8800 gts or whatever I was running 1680x1050 at high spec with no issues. I am not an optical snob and rarely can I see the difference between high and very high, or medium shadows and higher. So, go with what looks good for you stepping up.

Check the Nexus for some mods as well, especially the fix packs might include fixes for things like nvidia black interior bug (don't remember if that was an issue in DAO or not), and other things you might blame on your gc but may be the game engine.

You should be able to run it maxed easily - hell I run it maxed at 60 fps at 1920x1200 with an inferior system to that (core 2 duo and GTX 260). Whether your laptop overheats or not is up to how well it's built and how clean the vents are.

Note however that DA:O has some background script running that means it will always eat up 100% of the processor. So you'll probably want to only allow one core to run it by changing its affinity. If you want a "permanent" way to set affinity, you can use a batch file to run it with a given affinity.

With your specs, you should be able to run on very high. As for what is healthy, monitoring the cpu/gpu temperatures and keeping them at safe levels would probably be wise. In your case, the TjMax for i5 is 100 degrees, so keepin the cpu at around 80 degrees or less is safe enough, I guess. GPU temps can go a bit higher safely.
