As the top says, whats the best group make-up? including your own character.

I saw one guide that said having 3 mages and a tank(one mage as the healer) and force shield the tank then just aoe. It works well but I normaly find myself running out of mana quick then I just use staff attacks.

I've played the game now a few times.

Most times, I have two tanks, a rogue and a mage. One of my tanks, does two swords the other a sword and a shield.. I use both Al and Zer in that tank spot since they both duel.

It also depends on the area that I'm going to be doing. I have used each and every character in my party at some time.

Do you really need two tanks?I mean I don't suppose it would hurt but normally Al seems to beable to hold everything well.

There is no "best" makeup. If it's possible to complete the game with a solo character, it should also be possible to run any party formation you like

Though I would like to say that from a purist perspective, a warrior that's dual-wielding is not a tank. Tanks are purely defensive characters who exist for the sole reason to take all the beatings for the rest of the team. If he's not using a sword and board and specced to use them, he's a midliner (or at best, an offtank).

This is the team makeup that I run with:

Frontline: Warrior (weapon and shield) as tank

Midline 1: Melee rogue (my own character) as primary DPS and main assist

Midline 2: Optional (doesn't matter as long as the character provides DPS and/or CC)

Backline: Mage defensive healer/buffer/CC (no DPS provided by this character)

It works well. I rarely have to break out the consumables to finish a fight.

wait, you can beat the game without any party members at all? How?

Naked Fury is developing a guide to soloing the game in this thread, if that tickles your interest.

interesting but it looks more annoying then fun to do it as solo, mostly kiting the bosses and such.

best? define best ..

DW Warrior +

Bard - song bot
Shale - buff bot
Wynne - heal bot

with such set up one can basically solo, manage one character, yet destroy everything.

Well I spose "Best" would be a group that obliterates anything while easily being able to solo.

My best group is the one i am having the most fun with, rp-wise.

My character ends up staying with Alistair for the good of the Grey Wardens despite being in love with (and breaking up with) Zevran. Zev is the one who always comes to my aid, shares thoughts and feelings while Alistair is there because he is needed for the good of Ferelden ( from my characters point of view anyway at the early stage when the relationship choice was forced -- i do so wish they gave you the chance to restart relationships contextually within the game ( not a flip flop mod but a real hard to manage decision to end one and restart one relationship with long standing repercussions. )

Thus, roleplay wise, she usually brings the two of them along - usually rounded out by Wynne, sometimes morrigan. This despite my character also being rogue along with Zevran. Is this group OPTIMAL? Hell no way. But on this play through i just couldnt do it any other way. It made way more logical sense to leave Zev behind on missions for damage control or sheer mage-i-ness but having to give up Zev completely in every other way, she just needed him as a kill-buddy - a way to keep him close. So freaking sad. *grins and restarts another character* Funny, the game is so well written that what *I* orginally wanted changed as I really spent time with the characters themselves, but I digress...

What made this group the best for *me* is what i *felt* about it - not what it would do for me. Zev saved my ass more than a few times. Ever my champion :P

Morrigan did get pretty durable once i arcane warriored her arse. She alone took down a boss when the rest got wiped within seconds because they foolishly followed the tactics I had poorly set for them (lol) and i was too bloody annoyed at myself to give up. I literally whooped out a cheer for her when she was done. Good times. I rarely make choices to be *the best* though -- maybe i just like things to be difficult and full of tension. *snickers and goes to try to find a way to seduce Duncan before he dies*

That's really more of a guide for soloing with the worst possible soloing class.  Warriors and mages can have a much easier time of things than a dual wield rogue ever could.  Templar and Arcane Warrior speicilizations of the former especially.

Properly buffed and healed DW is, in my opinion, way above almost anything the game can put up.

Heroic Offense, Stone Aura, Song of Courage, optionally Haste, Glyph of Warding, Heroic Defense, Heroic Aura, Lifeward, Cleansing Aura, Anti-Magic Ward, Dispel Magic (most of them can be implemented to Tactics thus "auto-cast").

Some will probably disagree, which is the nature of "best" in the case, but I would hardly look for any other set up which would be as powerful, yet required as little management.

So to be considered a tank you must have a masochistic philosophy on life... heh

A man walks into a bar, "random bashing anyone?" Tank jumps up enthusiastically "Beat me! Beat me!"

I think the best group is the one that works best for you. The one you feel comfortable with.

My funnest party to take was Zev because for his great party banter, Leliana because she is my dream girl in life, Morrigan because she is the girl you have fanasties about but never bring home to mother, and me as a rogue, so 3 rogue, 2 melee, one as archer and a mage on nightmare mode. was the most craziness and fun in fights I have had in a long time.

Pretty much, yeah.  No prizes for guessing why tanking is not a popular role.

I would say it's more like "Beat me!  Beat me!  Ignore that fact that Princess Stabbity-Stab-Kill-Kill is tearing you a new one from behind!  I'm the real threat here!"

Best party depends on what your goal is. If you want to breeze through the game three mages and a tank would probably be best. Though if you want to experience every content in the game then one of each class is my advice, for the fourth spot pick rogue or mage, never a warrior. My reasoning: rogue can provide the extra tank/dps with the ranger pet while also providing support with bard songs, while mage can supplement the first mage with spells he/she doesn't have.

IDK I guess I was that rare breed in MMORPGs that loved to tank, it was great, I would be like"I will tank for you, but I want 75gold for my repair bill" The grp would be like, we aren't paying you, I would say fine see you in two hrs when you can't find a tank, my price at the time will be double. It was great my tank was filthy rich and would also be hired out because ppl hated waiting for a tank.

Best for what... if you want the easiest run with little management, I'd say PC sword/shield warrior (templar champion) with Wynne healing, Leliana, and Sten or Morrigan for the last slot. With proper tactics that group can pretty much steamroll every encounter in the game. Other groups might do it easier, but few require less management.

Not that I want to argue .. :)

Why sword/shield when DW out-DPS her/him, especially battling multiple enemies, yet has minor disadvantages? We can debate minor .. with buffs and Dex, which is almost "native" for DW, such character is almost un-hittable and un-killable, and there are not that many encounters in the game I can recall where sword/shield or 2H would perform better. I will dare :) to say that 2H would be "better" than sword/shield.

We knew the "best" was bound to be trolled (sry Tyken132), but if we talk about having a tank and support, DPS is the only concern really.

I suppose the basic template would have a tank, damage dealer, healer, and possibly some crowd control if the healer can't cover it. The best tank would obviously be the PC, but that bores me. I had some nice success running as a two-handed warrior with Alistair, Morrigan, and Shale, I think. Morrigan had a couple healing spells to keep us going. I also tried a more obvious approach, with a PC tank, Wynne, Lelianna, and Sten. That group did well.

Basically, it varies.

Yeh I tend to agree.. Having your main as a dex based dual wielding warrior is probably the easiest path. I find the class quite boring until you hit level 12. At level 12 you can pick up death blow which gives you back a lot of stamina per kill and allows you to endlessly spam talents. All you need is wynn as a healer with flaming weapons and the main character just mows everything down in seconds.

I've been messing about with two-handers. Unfortunately I had to start over this morning as my game was royally borked requiring reinstall. I had been using the CT mod to see what it brings to the two handed class. I liked some of the changes but still feel the class needs additional balancing. It was quite fun to play tho and it was just as easy as the dual wield route. Boss battles are arguably easier as you cannot be knocked on your ass. There is quite a big difference between the CT mod and standard nightmare tho. Stock nightmare you need to take precise striking as the missing becomes quite ridiculous.
