I've always wondered why Shiala (who I understand was indoctrinated) is able to regain her mind, but others like Benezia and Saren were not.  Is it because she was given to the Thorian and it undid the indoctrination by invoking its own form of mind control?

This would be the most plausible explanation.

Of course, it could be that she simply used the ancient artifact known as the Cheap Plot Device.

Saren gave the thorian the Asari as a trade, who knows the thorian might know the victims mind somehow right? So Saren would genuinely have to bargain with the Thorian in order to get what he wants rather than risking some low level peons loyalty in gaining knowledge from the Thorian. I mean its not like there are other ancient 50k yr old creatures Saren could readily get information from right, so why risk it. Risk compromising your entire plan to keep one idiot peon indoctrinated? Not worth it.

I always preferred to think it was the Thorian. But do wish i could have recruited Shiala instead of Liara. At least i could understand how a Commando like Shiala would be proficient with firearms. Liara's familiarity with guns was a bit of a stretch of the imagination.

That explains it.

She is 106 after all, giving her plenty of time to learn about both Protheans and combat. Also, look at Indiana Jones. Archaelologists in real life oftentimes travel to parts of the world that are dangerous.
