Is there an alternative to tactics?

Is there any way of getting around having to use tactics? I thought perhaps if I disabled them, then my characters would just use some sort of natural AI, but they just sat there. I'd like them to just do what makes sense for a given situation, even if it's not all that smart. I don't want to have to set up rules for every situation and worry about if I've covered every contingency, and I really don't like that if none of the tactics conditions are met, the characters either just basic attack or (even worse) do nothing at all based on the behavior I give them.

Is there an alternative to this?

Tactics ARE the AI. If you don;t want to mess with them, just leave them at whatever default the come with and they will act accordingly. Tactics are in no way a necessary part of the game, they just give options to people that want more control.

If I leave them as they are, won't they just use at most 3 of their skills, and only when those conditions are met? Morrigan, for example, has like 10 spells to start, but she's only got 3 tactics. If I leave her on her default, will she make use of her spell repertoire? I haven't really noticed her doing so.

Yes, without tactics they will sit there until you tell them manually what to do. Tactics, as Sloth said, are what makes your NPCs attack, defend, heal, or run screaming with no pants. If you want default behaviours, select a preset tactic from the drop down menu. Make One of them a "Defender" (Tank), a mage the "Healer", and your third a DPS ("Ranged", "Supporter", "Controler", or "Scrapper".)

They will still use other abilites once their Tactics are done. For example, if you only have 1 tactic enabled, Morrigan will do that tactic, then use other spells she has until said Tactic is off Cooldown.

What you might need to do is every few levels gained go back into the tactics and rechoose one of the default tactics scripts. (Defender, Scrapper, Archer for melee. Damager, Supporter, Healer for mage) This will build a default script using the talents and skills they have.

Obviously you want to pick the script that matches best to the character behavior you want, doesn't make a whole lot of sense to pick Archer for Sten as an example.

As you gain levels and talents and tactics slots the game tries to add to the existing scripts if its one of the default ones, but I've found its easier to just regenerate them every once in a while.

I have generally found that without tactics they won't use a majority of the talents/spells, but they will autoattack.

I see, so once their tactics are exhausted, they fall back to default behavior? And is this only for the preset types? In other words, if I make a custom tactic, and they go through that list, will they still act intelligently, or will they just auto attack (or do nothing)?

If you have it on Custom, I believe they will cast spells/use abilites that coincide with what tactics you assigned them. For example; if you made Morrigan into a Custom Healer, and only have heal spells on her Tactics, she will only cast heals/auto attack; but if you make her a spellcaster, she'll use any spell. The point of tactics is to have specific instances covered. IE - If your main toon is a Mage, you set up a tactic on your tank to use taunt whenever your mage is being attacked.

No, they don't fall back to anything else. The tactics are the default behaviour - and the Ai continually cycles through them to see which action is most appropriate in any given siuation.

Well, I customed Wynne to be a spellcaster rather than a healer, and she doesn't have Winter Grasp in her tactics at all, yet I see her use it quite frequently after cycling through her tactics.
