I like to try and immerse myself into the environment, so I walking through Lothering the other day, the companions rattling on behind me about this or that, when I spun the camera around and realized that they weren't actually walking with me, they would wait until I got a few feet ahead of them and then just sort of lurched forward to my location.

It's like that so they can catch up quickly if you get too far ahead or if you had them on "Hold Position". I do agree though that it's slightly annoying, especially with Shale who rambles and makes a lot of noise each time she stops.

If you used Shale up to a certain area in the game, a NPC confirms it is a she.
