Someone brought this up in a post, but I have been unable to find it, so I figured I'd bring it up again in a new one, though, if anyone can direct me to the original thread, that would be great.

What was said was the want to merely weild a single handed sword, or any weapon, without a shield or dual wielding, or a two handed weapon. Much like Riordon does, I believe. I was thinking of trying this out, experiementing with my sword and shielf warrior I'm working with right now. Though I don't know if any skills would work with just a sword, but it's worth trying out, I hope.
What do you think?

If you are just using a single one-handed weapon, then nothing in dual weapon, archery, weapon and shield, or two-handed school will be usable. You will be stuck with what the core warrior (or rogue) talents offer, as well as what your specializations (if any) offer.

It's a shame that Dragon Age along with most other contemporary CRPGs (and MMORPGs) ignore single-handed single-weapon combat styles. Best to keep that sword paired with a shield or dagger, I suppose.

Maybe instead of a warrior, you could play a rogue. More talents that way. Thought I'm not certain how well that would work.

Yeah, I ave it a try, not so much fun. I guess Riordan is the only one who can pull it off and make it look good.

You know wielding one sword only wound up being an epic fail for him. If he had dual wielded on top of the arch demon he would not have fallen.

Yes, but he made it all look good, even falling.

Rogue is the only way you'll get any "activated" damage abilities in Deadly Strike and Low Blow. I've thought about doing this as my archer rogue on my solo playthrough spent much of his time in the early game wielding an axe and a +3 defense shield (could easily have done without it) and he did alright with just those 2 abilities.

You also get backstab which when used with Coup de Grace (what else are you going to spend your points on) will give you a spree of backstabs every time you used dirty fighting. Not to mention Assassin and dueling trees would give you some decent abilities and its been shown that you can get 100% spell resist on a rogue so you don't need the Templar class for dealing with mages.

Keep in mind I'm also thinking of this as a solo playthrough, as far as a full party with a 1h no shield character would just be your party killing everything for you.

Well if you follow Riordan around and watch him fight in the last battle he uses dirty fighting and then stabs them. It seems a rogue would be the choice for 1 weapon no shield but only if that one weapon would do more with a stab than the mainhand weapon of a dual wielder and if that extra damage made up for the lost speed without momentum.

Who is Riordan?

He's a Grey Warden from Orlais (though he was born in Ferelden), who was sent to investigate the situation in Ferelden after they didn't hear from Ostagar and were turned back at the border by Loghain's forces.  He was captured by Arl Howe and imprisoned in the Arl of Denerim's estate, where you encounter him and help him escape.  He later provides more information on the Grey Wardens and later informs you of your duty in slaying the Archdemon.  Riordan volunteers to make the final blow, and to that end, goes off alone to take on the Archdemon.  He puts on an impressive show, leaping onto the Archdemon's back and RIDING IT.  Unfortunately, the Archdemon forces him over to one of its wings.  Riordan's sword cuts a tear in the wing and Riordan falls to his death.  However, the tear in its wing forces the Archdemon to land, allowing you to fight it on much more even terms.

I was also thinking about doing this, I have always prefered just a single weapon. Like in KOTOR 2 I always just had a single lightsaber and just let it auto attack because it looked cooler than the abilities did.
