So I have now just beaten the game for my first time, and I feel that exploited the game.
So I was up on the roof with the Dragon, and I have my 4, me, Allister, Leliana, and Morrigan, and I was launching the Ballista at the dragon. Leliana is not only good with Traps (which seem extremely useful), but she is also a ranger. So I summoned the Great Bear I believe it is called, and I stood on one platform to cause damage.
But when the Dragon moved too far for me, I used my bear to move to another location and keep firing. I questioned if a bear could open up a door, much less use a sophisticated piece of machinery. Unfortunately, Gentle Ben was unable to unjam the ballista, but I adapted.
So if anyone has problems killing the dragon at the end, get a bear to do it.
Whew!!! Did I cheat the game?

Clearly you've never lived in an area with bears. Trust me, bears can open anything.

Rogue. Bombs. Soulrot. Acid. Fire. Freeze. Shock. Soulrot is ready to go again. One bomb, EVERY round. Don't even need anyone else to take down the archdemon. Especially if the Rogue has Stealth IV and keeps attacking from the rear.

I had Stealth III on Leliana, didn't think to use that. I just told everyone to use ranged attacks and launch the ballista, then when the dragon ignored me, I was too scared to leave the platform, so I sent in the bear.

Hehe, bears are cool. It still makes me smile to see they are actually able to open doors , chests and pick up loot from corpses for you. One of these days I'll try a 3 ranger party and send in an army of furry tanks.

You can only unjam them a certain number of times, after that they become permanently broken. At least on PC version, tho I doubt its different on console.

I played on the easiest level (going to now play it again on normal) and it jammed often for me. I use the PC version.

A three ranger party is a blast! Sending in three great bears to tank while everyone else uses range weapons is fun. The ArchDemon does not stand a chance!

I actually just beat the game last night in NM without a rogue to fix the ballistas. None of them were up before the Archdemon returned from that far-away spot. I ended up just switching to a bow on my war and hoping that the Elven army and I could bring his health down, which was all I could hope for. Took a really long time, though.XOGHunter246 wrote...

Ballista: Will jam on ALL Difficulty settings. Only a Rogue can unjam (using the same exact skill as for disarming traps, I believe.) For all ballista, after it jams a third time, it cannot be repaired again. (Which can be a bummer if it's the only one that bear on the archdemon's current location.)

Jamming does NOT occur as a function of "Will jam after X number of shots." It's a probability, like flipping a coin: sooner or later, it will come up heads. You _could_ get tails 20 times in a row, but that's unlikely. The fact that you didn't get jams isn't that it _won't_ jam, but rather that you were lucky.
I'm not sure, but I _think_ that the higher the operator's trap disarming ability, the less likely it is that there will be a jam.

On xbox console, the ballistas never jam on Casual. I've tested them in the archdemon fight over half a dozen times to make sure.

There's a lesson there Soshoni, always look at your minimap. Not just for this game, but I have met other players in other games that refuse to look at the UI. I would write those people messages, "I'm right behind you and I'm going to kill you." Then wait, then kill them.

But I do have respect for someone who can defeat the Dragon head-on. Must make the other two easier by comparison.
