This bothers me tremendously. The thought that parts of all future games are intentionally withheld until more money is paid is simply unethical. I can sort of understand if the game was free but having to BUY a full game only to not get a full game is just simply effed up.

"And consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of business."

A more outright lie has never been spoken.

<shrug> People are buying it. In large droves. So obviously if they are willing to spend money on something that isn't "needed" then they must enjoy it.

The microtransaction argument is nearly identical to the DLC one five years ago. If anyone thinks they won't go as far as they can on microtransactions just like they are on DLC, then I think people might be deluding themselves.

DLC has already taken the road to what original opponents were railing against. The concept of Story DLC was a travesty to many, who said they drew the line at things like appearance packs and weapons, but that they would never buy something that involved quests or characters. That line was pushed back to say "Story DLC is okay, just as long as the core game isn't directly tied into it." And now we have people begging Bioware to make a DLC that will "fix" ME3, where people would be paying extra for an ending.

Microtransactions in AAA games are just in their infancy. They will grow and eventually be the very things we say we will never participate in. The question is will people actually abstain? My answer is no, they will not. Just like people buy DLC in massive droves regardless of how unethical it may be packaged and sold, people will abide by microtransactions.

There is an anecdote about a frog being boiled. If a frog leaps into a boiling pot of water, it will leap out right away, suffering little damage. If, instead, a life frog is in a pot of cold water and the pot is heated up to a boil very slowly, the frog will not "abandon ship" so to speak and will let itself be boiled alive.

The gaming industry is the pot of water. It has been rising to a boil for years now. Are you going to be the frog that jumps out, or will you buy more DLC and MT item packs until you are a boiled frog?

So long as "micro-content" is purely cosmetic or purely optional enhancements I'm fine with it. As far as I see it, I'm paying for story, characters, and fun combat. If micro-content is required to get the most out of those things, bye-bye EA games.

Bethesda practically has my money on tap because, because as a flag waving PCGMR, I can bring down the console *while playing the game* and enhance my play through *as I play.* That's ****ing perfect! I can pack a ton of fun into my 60 minute play sessions and not have to grind drops or scratch for crafting materials. If EA is going to start offering things like a 99 cent "potion vat" that sits in each and every one of my Inquisitor's castles and ensures that I get three healing potions and three mana potions per in-game day, I *might* pick that up. Then I don't have to grind those mats to craft that ****. I can just play the damn game. If they start doing something like "you need 100 gold buttons to craft the Codpiece of Ape Fornication" but there are only 100 gold buttons hidden in the entire game... Though they are on sale in the store for 10 buttons per dollar! I'm probably not going to be playing EA games much longer.

This decision makes ZeniMax and Bethesda look even more like what they are in my opinion... Gaming's top developer and publisher. The ball is in EA's court though. I'll need to see what they have to offer me.

Just read a little bit about how microtransactions are making their way into every EA game. This is another check in the column of not purchasing the game.

And this is coming from someone who has no problems buying DLC, or hell even putting 5-10 bucks into Simpsons Tapped Out that I've been playing for the last few months.

Microtransactions are not something I'm at all interested in dealing with after paying 60 dollars for the game in the first place, and then another 30 in DLC, probably even more based on Mass Effect 3 DLCs being more expensive then they were in the past. Hell with Skyrim I'm completely ignoring DLC until the GotY edition comes out because it will be cheaper to rebuy another copy of the game with all the DLC then to buy the DLC.

Good example. I totally agree...add 2K and Ubisoft to that as well. They make quality stuff without any microtransaction bull. I actually LOVE how Ubisoft does it with their service. They use the Ubi opints or whatever to encourage people to buy more of their games for unloackables. Said unlockables are completely optional and pretty much cosmetics (but c'mon, let's face it, we all want to look like a creepy jester running around stabbing random people).

If the plan is always to have DLC, they are not holding anything back. The plan is to make the game and some DLC. If there wasn't going to be DLC, they'd have had a different production plan with less stuff in it.

Are we that gullible to believe that? Remember the days of Final Fantasy games where you'd get a @#$%load of random quests that would have constituted a "DLC". Now, developers simply take out content that ought to have been a part of the original game and leaves it off so they can resell it later. From Ashes should've been included in the original ME3 release. So was Omega which was talked about multiple times yet was strangely left off.

Wait, what? You're saying that a project without DLC revenue gets the same production budget as a project with DLC revenue? Really?

Why would it?

I HATE the ME3 MP Troll Store. I will NEVER repeat that experience again. NEVER. So, good luck selling DA3 to people like me if it has that crap.

If, ME3 MP had all content unlocked at level 1, then, at least I would be able to sample it all. But, noooooooooooooo.......... You have to grind for an eternity to just try something new. Then you get trolled with stupid appearance unlocks on characters and if it's a weapon, it's lame at level 1, no matter if it's an ultra rare.  I'm not putting myself through that crap ever again. And the wonderful thing about it all is that I do not have to. NWOnline and other games will not have an ME3 MP Troll Store.

I'm also tired of unlock treadmills so I doubt I will be interested in BF4. I doubt I will be interested in another EA game in a long time considering their trolling ways.

*snip*

So I ask: if you dislike it so much, why do you keep purchasing it? If you think that games are otherwise incomplete without said content, why do you keep purchasing the games? Lastly, how do we reconcile this perspective with those that feel that value is just fine, and do feel that the games are still complete without DLCs?

I left part of the post in so you can reference which one I'm talking about.  This post is full of so many truths it's almost painful.

Fact is, I always feel I get my money's worth from games that I buy.  Sometimes I wish they were different, or better, or longer, but I've never felt I've wasted my money.  Even Diablo III, which was a dismal disappointment, netted me 10 hours of play time which justified the purchase.

Everybody has to make money.  We're a capitalist society.  Just remember, that when people like me come to forums and complain about one thing or another, we do it because we're passionate about the game, or games in general.  Keep on keeping on ;).

I personally thought the microtransactions haven't been too annoying in most of the games I've played.

Then again, I don't play any free-to-play MMOs.

As long as they get the money needed from microtransactions it won't matter that Joe Schmoe doesn't buy it.

They don't have to "crusade" at all. It just doesn't matter unless something more drastic happens in the overall market.
