Hi there all fellow Mass Effect fans! I just recently started my first cosplay costume project, after countless hours of searching the web for info, pics, templates, props etc. Now I think I'm finally ready to start actually doing it!

Here's my reference:

Posted Image

Since I don't have my own blog yet, I'm going to post everything here. If there's somekind of regulation that prevents this, please let me know!

The template by Narayas (Download from http://www.julianbeek.nl/blog/):

Posted Image
I've noticed that these templates serve as a good base to start from, to me atleast.

You may also want to follow THIS thread for more information and discussion about the template and the build.
Haven't decided how I'm going to build the breather helmet, but I'll update this to add a link for my source when I've found a good one.

I'll try to catch pictures of every step to keep things interesting. Here's what I've got so far:

After some careful measurements, I scaled the first template (Shoulders/Pauldron) to my size (hopefully I got it right) and printed them on to A4 paper (don't remember the thickness/weight, but it's thicker than the normal paper).

Posted Image

The next step was to carefully cut them and trace them on to the foam that I bought (10mm thick).

Posted Image

Now I'm currently trying to cut them using X-acto knife and some scissors. I'll post some more when I've got the shoulder parts cut out and glued together. If this step turns out good and the part is the right size, I'll then consider doing almost all the parts at once and posting more updates per part as I go.

Can you post your sources? In case others wish to follow in your footsteps?

Got the pieces cut yesterday and started working on them today. What I did was I shaped them using hot air blower.

Posted Image

I then decided to try to give them that same type of texture what you see in Shepard's Armour (commonly known as carbon fiber look, though I don't think it looks anything near that). I decided to try this carbon film, which was extremely easy to stretch once heated and this one doesn't have that glossiness on it, which will make the weathering step a bit easier.

Posted Image

Here's how the pieces turned out (left one was my first try, right one was the second which I decided to stick with):

Posted Image

I may do something about those carved deepenings later on.
Here's how the upper pauldron looks like once glued.

Posted Image

I still need to add the carbon vinyl on to the lower pauldron. Gonna do that tonight and then start planning the next part. Probably going to do the right arm first before going for the left arm and the rest.

Made the bicep parts, but it turns out that the outer part was too small in diameter. I must have underestimated the size of my muscles ;). The inner bicep part was just about the right size but i'm gonna make it a bit larger as well while the outer part couldn't fit on to it at all, so...wasted some foam and time but oh well, it's good practice :)

Below you can see how I approached building this part. I cut that one section out and replaced it with a 3mm thick foam part. Wanted to see how it would turn out. What do you think?

Will try to make another one today if I can, need to go to the gym now. If I'm not tired as hell, I'll at least finish cutting and gluing the bicep and put the carbon vinyl tomorrow.

With Dremel You Can! :D

Posted Image

Inner bicep part glued and sealed with wood glue mixed with water 1:1 ratio.

Posted Image

While waiting for it to dry, I started working on the outer bicep part

Posted Image

As you can see, I modified it to look like in the reference picture above. Currently both parts are drying out. Then I'll perhaps primer them...or just go on with rest of the arm. BTW! I might do the pauldrons with the same method I'm using now, by doing all the cutting and gluing first, then shaping them with heat, sealing with glue/water mix, primer and THEN the carbon vinyl. I think the vinyl might stick and look better this way. Wasting more material, I know...but that's just the way it is when you're learning and trying different methods.

Got the bicep done. Gonna primer it tomorrow and see how the vinyl sticks on to it. I'm hoping it will look better than the shoulder pieces so I can make them again :D

Posted Image

Posted Image

I don't know if you can see it from these pics but I took a different route to do those cuts. Rather than being satisfied with the result I got using Dremel, I just cut it all open and glued a 3mm thick foam underneath the whole thing. Looks a lot cleaner this way. The edges aren't that clean, but I'll try to fix that before I start painting.

Now that I looked closely at the N7 Armour in the game (ME3) I noticed that the bicep part was indeed the way it was in my patterns which I printed. Should I stick with this version (same as seen in the pic above and the version in that reference pic seen in my first post) or go with the original?

Anywho, made the gauntlet part today, going to finish detailing it with my dremel perhaps tomorrow.

I might do the shoulders again, this time gonna make them the way they're in ME3. See pic below:

Okay, finished up detailing the gauntlet. I think it came out looking pretty good, not perfect of course, but I'm happy with it. Perhaps the first part I'm completely happy with, which made me reconsider making the previous parts even better :P

I heard this one method from a friend which will make the surface of this type of foam look a lot smoother, even the parts I've cut and carved. Will try this at some point...

Ok, as I said before, I wanted to make new shoulder parts as seen in ME3 (see pic above). Since I didn't have any patterns for them, I had to make my own by watching the pics. Here's what it turned out like. NOTE! It's not positioned correctly at the moment!

The material I chose isn't the easiest to cut and do small details on, but it's very durable.
Been quite busy working on other projects lately, but finally got some free time rest of the week so hope to see some progress updates by the end of this week!

Finished up one arm today. The bicep and the gauntlet parts are now joint together with elbow part in between them, using elastic band for flexibility. I also started with the front torso instead of the other arm, for variety. Here's what I managed to do so far:

Posted Image
Posted Image

That's my second version. The first one had too much gap between the smaller parts on top of the chest peace. Not a big difference, but I wasn't satisfied with it. This one instead, I am satisfied with :)

Tomorrow I'll try to finish some more of the front torso — would be great to finish the whole thing during the weekend (not sure if I have the time to do it though).

Looks a little rough on that shoulder pad but I predict this is going to be awesome when completed. Keep it up!!

I think so too, this material is making it really hard to cut any angles such as 45 degrees on the edges, which were required on the shoulder pad to achieve that result. But I think those "rough" spots might come in handy though when painting and weathering. If not, I'll do another one using a bit different technique for the cutting on the edges.

Ran out of foam during the weekend so I got some more today. Instead of building the armor today, I composed my own track to officially say goodbye to the Mass Effect franchise. Having played through the new and last DLC "Citadel", I kind of got inspired and thought I had to do this! :P
You can check it out here:

That is pretty sweet. You should reinforce all of the pieces with aluminum strips when your finished so it isn't to flimsy

Not a bad idea. That actually crossed my mind at some point, too. But do you mean putting those aluminium strips underneath the armor parts or inside the parts?  I'm going to see how much firmness the sealer gives to the parts first and then I'll perhaps think about reinforcing it with the aluminium strips.

I'm going to spray paint it with my spray gun. I also decided to spray paint those small patterns you see on the armor (carbon look) instead of using the carbon film. A friend of mine tried painting this same foam without any sealer and it turned out just fine, didn't suck into the foam. WIll have to see for myself before I go painting the whole armor though
