I'd say link it to somebody else, if they're going to do that. I'm pretty sure Amell and Mahariel got the most mentions in DA2, did they not?

Indeed, and also the only ones named as far as I remember.

I hope for some Aeducan/Brosca references if we get to go to Kal Sharok in DA:I

I think OP is secretly Cullen.

LOL nice.

Actually making it an Amell could atleast could give them excuse for the main character to have a traditionally English accent.

Uh, if they are from a cirlce stationed in orlais then they are going to have a french accent. Anyway it's very much possible an amell origin could be there but I doubt it.

Just because they're an Amell doesn't automatically make them a mage... and the age they're given to the tower also effects whether they get a permanent accent or not...

I don't mind who they as long as there is no disappearing act by the close of play.

OP, I'm thinking: no. But we'll be able to choose between multiple backgrounds, so there may be one that's an Amell relative. Whether or not you can actually be a mage in it, also remains to be seen.

BTW, people, because there's gonna be backgrounds, I very much doubt that the protagonist will always be an Amell, no matter which one you choose.

I wouldn't count on it. I figure the backgrounds are going to change but the surname is going to remain the same, cuz otherwise they'd have to voice like 3 lines extra every time the Protag's name is mentioned. Unless they don't use a surname. Which I really hope isn't the case. I don't want my lover calling me Inquisitor. xp

I have a friend who played a mage in Origins, and he's currently playing a mage in DA2.

He has no awareness of the characters' relation. In fact he's unaware of either character's last name. In fact he can't even remember the names of his party members. But he really enjoyed both games (DA2 so far).

This is an example of your average Dragon Age player. One purchase, one playthrough, enjoys combat, only pays attention to the broad strokes in the story.

Therefore (and not to be mean) who is related to the protagonist really is not discussion worthy in the scheme of, "make it happen."

As long as he's having fun, I guess. I'm the kind of player who tries to learn and remember everything.

didn't think I would be insulted within least than an hour

It's not an insult. It's an statement of fact. In single player games, each player's experience is unique, and irrelevant to the enjoyment of someone else's game experience.

I also play as a mage, but i feel more connected to Ferelden than to the Amell Family. If they give the option to choose nationality in the game that would be great.

As Wynne said:  "because I am Fereldan, for one. I have no love for the Orlesian Empire, so the thought of it falling to pieces causes me no distress."

Do we know how far into the future DA3 is set in comparison to DA2? If it's 20 or so years after DA2, I wouldn't mind it being a relative of Hawke, perhaps the child of one of his or her siblings. How that would  require important a save so that the choice of what sibling is alive it is, and if they survived the deep roads or didn't go at all.

If we can pick our origins, I wouldn't mind one of the other origin families being connected to the protag. Like the Couslands. I figured we'd be playing the child of the Warden by now.

I didn't mind the MageWarden and Hawke connection in DA2 as it was presented as more of a wink & a nod rather than a plot point, but to introduce a third relative as a protagonist would be too coinky-dinky for my liking and place a certain preference towards the Warden being a Mage.

EDIT - Oh, and technically Cousland did get a mention in DA2...when Isabela was trying to remember what the Tome of Koslun was called she said "Cusslan? Cousland?".  Posted Image  So kinda sorta maybe not really.

Unless it is revealed that the Amells are descendants of Andraste or something, it seem too far fetched that there would yet another great Hero from the same family, on the same generation with a completely unrelated upbringing as well (maybe if the Amells had a hero academy!), unless it becomes a running joke I don't see it as likely.

Not really. Less chances for bethany/carver to show up is a good thing.

Pretty much right around the epilogue, or three years after the climax.

Anyway, no thanks.  The Amell thing was more of a cameo thing than anything.  Doing it again would really be straining things.  Aside from which, I'm guessing they're going to attempt to distance themselves from Hawke a decent amount.

BioWare said we will be able to pick our background. Whether this background is specific down to the family name e.g. 1.You are related to the Amell's of Kirkwall but were raised near the border between Ferleden and Orlais or 2. You are a bastard child of the Valisti royal family in Antiva or more general e.g. You are from a small village in Orlais is yet to be revealed.

Personally I am a fan of an Amell selectable background, since it would allow me to link three mages by blood.

We might end up with a fixed last name, like Shepard in Mass Effect, but be able to select our background template in much the same way we were able to in ME.

You may be right, but there's no need for this sort of commentary. It adds nothing to the discussion.

Nods.  I'm with you.

But I have an acute awareness of "majority behaviour."  Frequently I think hardcore RPGers and gamers think the whole world thinks and behaves as they do.  Knowing that they don't helps perspective AND it keeps one from going bonkers.

No, the protagonist will be one of Maric's other children.

Or, the PCs will be different due to different background choices that were said to be in the game, but of course those could be removed before release.

I think the surname will probably be selectable. I expect the title Inquisitor will be used rather than surname in conversations.
