Maybe the protagonist can't be an Amell because Charade will be a LI.

(No, not a serious theory.)

Honestly

We could do worse. I liked her.

No, the new PC cannot be an Amell.

Cannot? Hmm, now I'm curious...

Right, can anybody explain to me why multiple people find this significant?

I go with the hypothesis that Charade is making a comeback as a companion/Li. She would be just the right kind of minor character to get fleshed out as companion. It worked wonders with Isabela after all.

Anything vaguely straw-like must be grasped.

(No, not a serious completely serious theory. I like her, though.)

I think this has merit.

Because it is an unusual way of saying it. One might have expected "No, the new PC IS not an Amell."

Obviously you shouldn't read too much into this. It might mean nothing. But it hints that there is either a reason why an Amell couldn't have been considered or there are multiple choices for main PC's and none of them are Amell's.

So a pre-written background is confirmed, then?  Possibly a mandatory surname?

Bioware confirmed multiple backgrounds.

Bioware confirmed multiple backgrounds.

...along with multiple characters?

Since when has Dragon Age not had a pre written background with mandatory surnames?

Exactly. DAO had six, DA2 had one. DAO let you craft your character from the ground up a hell of a lot better than DA2 did, but that doesn't change that you're still playing a specific person in the world, connected to certain other characters through their origin stories.

I've been thinking about this since DA3 was announced. I always play as a mage and I really like the idea of three of the most important people in Thedas not only being mages, but also from the same family. It makes the story more impactful for my gameplay experience.

No, the new PC cannot be an Amell.

Isn't this an invitation to lock the thread? Why is it still... unlocked?

I would point to this thread: http://social.biowar.../index/14604410
Started by a Bioware employee specifically announcing something to hear feedback. People may still have thoughts/ideas/points of discussion regarding the Amells and their, well, EXclusion now I suppose. Just because a question has been answered doesn't mean a thread has to be locked.

Maybe. But, tell that to Ninja Stan.

Charade.

I can say that without feelinglike an idiot because I called this back when there was no DA3 forum.

She's a combat NPC who sides with the protagonist.  In DA2 the player gets to see her in action and gets to see her connection to Gamblin.  And lets be honest, why would Gamblin have a sidequest in which his daughter is a kick **** archer other than to introduce the next Isabella?

It's obvious to me she will be a companion.  Always has been. So while I agree most people probably read into Gaider's statement from some misplaced sense of Amell infatuation, I now suspect he did say it that way for a reason.

It would be kinda wonky if every hero in the DA-verse could be an Amell. So far my DA experience has produced one jaded and bitter Amell and one psychotic one, so it might be best to give that family a rest :)

Like in DAO where the player could choose to play multiple characters. They each had a different name. In Mass effect you could choose different backgrounds but you were still playing Shepard.

With the survei rumors I started loosing hope that Charade would be a companion because none sounded like her, but I totallly agree with you in her being just enough exposed to be a companion.

We know she is kick ass, and that is basically what we knows.

(And she is much better than any of the rumoured ones).

It never has.

That doesn't change that I dislike the mandatory surname, and would like to see it go away.

I'm going to say the reason the PC can't be an Amell is because an Amell is already in the story and it wouldn't make sense for the PC to be related to him/her.

Or more simply because there aren't any more. I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in-game that Leandra and Gamlen are the last of the Amell's (I think Hawke get's lumped in too but Hawke's a Hawke not an Amell). Gamlen had one child, Charade, who is an established character and therefore can't be a PC.

Unless your Warden was an Amell, but obviously we won't be playing as him/her again.

Well yeah, I guess I should have clarified there are no more Amells up for grabs. Only so many exist and they're all taken.

Unless they're just related to the Amell family somewhere down the line, but have different Surnames? But anyway, I'm quite happy to play a completely new character unrelated to them lol.
