I've run into a number of issues surround this sort of thing and it's made by game rather annoying to play as a result.  I don't know if it has to do with savegame corruption or simply scripting errors, but frankly it gets quite frustrating when the game can't decide who I am supposed to be.  In one instance I had the game suddenly think that my male human noble character was a female, which, while funny at first, got old fast and made me delete him.  The second time I had a smoother play-through with a female elven mage, but when I got to the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest, the Guardian for some reason decided to ask me about the totally incorrect human noble background.  I don't know if anyone has any fixes for this sort of thing, or if I should reinstall or something, but suffice is to say it really is kind of odd.
