Al kidding aside, I could see if ONE hat looked like that. You could pick it up and say..."What the hell is ths thing supposed to be? My god it is ugly but hey..I need that extra magic rating" or yuo could say "By Andraste that is one stupid looking hat, I think I will continue to wear something that doesn't make me look like a refugee from a bad Mad Max ripoff.." I really can;t see the reasoning behind ALL hats looking that way. Unless of course the reason is 'our modelers were lazy'.

This is by no means a bashing thread, I am simply curious. Where do the mage hat designs come from? Are they from History, Imagination etc. I just can't picture them being Mage Hats for some reason. =/ Just curious.
Even thou l dont like myself, maybe they just wanted to do something a little different from what every other fantasy game does.
Some people will never get past the "d@d" standard of how things are suppossed to be[not talking about you, but in general].

I don't really see D&D pertaining here; as I've said in other threads, even a hood without feathers in the back seems more Mage-esque. Yes, a Wizard hat would be cool, but again; that's from LotR if anything, D&D didn't start that trend.
As for paragraph 2 of your statement, that's more of an answer I was looking for; I'd like a Bioware post about where the idea came from, just to sate my curiosity.

You really need a talk-show, all of your posts are both informative and hilarious. xD And yes, that's exactly how I feel.

Or the King Arthur stories and y'know... Merlin.

Or, you know, history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointy_hat has an interesting little breakdown of the history of the pointy hat. (seriously). A less interesting article discusses the history of hessian (burlap) http://en.wikipedia....iki/Burlap_sack

You spend an hour to make you mage look good in the character maker and then you have to put one of those thing on his head, it's a bit of a letdown

Perhaps. But, every other wear in the game looks just as one would expect in a standard fantasy game. It just makes the mage hat experiment even worse then it really is. :-)

How so? When did I once say anything bad about the designers? All I said is that I do not picture a mage hat the same way they do, and was curious as to where they got the idea from.

I was giving LotR as an example due to the D&D example. I was pointing out that his fantasy story came before D&D. If I wanted to actually compare it to the very first pointy hats, I would say what Sloth said.Kwanzaabot wrote...

Also if you'd like to get technical, the pointy hat that Merlin wore was givin to him first by disney. In history, Merlin was just an advisor, not even a Wizard.

While I'll agree that the headgear design for mages leaves something to be desired, I'm kind of glad Bio went an entirely different route than the usual fantasy stereotypes. It'd be interesting to hear where the idea came from, too, and if the decision to go that route was deliberate from the start or if it fit better into their world history/concept when they started on the art.
Yes! See that's what I wanted. I'm more interesting in hearing where the idea came from, rather than why they decided not to go the traditional wizard hat route.
