This is by no means a bashing thread, I am simply curious. Where do the mage hat designs come from? Are they from History, Imagination etc. I just can't picture them being Mage Hats for some reason. =/ Just curious. :D

lol - Possibly :) I just wanted to know why the art team decided on the current Models; I mean, to me they don't seem very Mage-like, but I could be wrong.

They are product placement for the new 'Burlap Sacks 'R' Us' chain of stores that is opening worldwide next year.

Al kidding aside, I could see if ONE hat looked like that. You could pick it up and say..."What the hell is ths thing supposed to be? My god it is ugly but hey..I need that extra magic rating" or yuo could say "By Andraste that is one stupid looking hat, I think I will continue to wear something that doesn't make me look like a refugee from a bad Mad Max ripoff.." I really can;t see the reasoning behind ALL hats looking that way. Unless of course the reason is 'our modelers were lazy'.

Even thou l dont like myself, maybe they just wanted to do something a little different from what every other fantasy game does.

Some people will never get past the  "d@d" standard of how things are suppossed to be[not talking about you, but in general].

I don't really see D&D pertaining here; as I've said in other threads, even a hood without feathers in the back seems more Mage-esque. Yes, a Wizard hat would be cool, but again; that's from LotR if anything, D&D didn't start that trend. ;)

As for paragraph 2 of your statement, that's more of an answer I was looking for; I'd like a Bioware post about where the idea came from, just to sate my curiosity. :D If I don't get one, I will simply put it out of my mind. :P

You really need a talk-show, all of your posts are both informative and hilarious. xD And yes, that's exactly how I feel. :)

Also note here that just because people don;t like the burlap sack doesn't mean that they have to have a giant cone on their head either (which is what people initially think of when you say 'wizard hat'). Basically a wizard can wear anything that is both flexible and light, this doesn't force them to appear on Fox's new gameshow "Cone, Sack or Die"

Yes, what I originally meant by Wizard Hat was a hat that you could see a wizard wearing. If some people can see the burlap sack being something they would see a Wizard wearing, well then all power to you. I, however, do not picture a bag over my head being something an all powerful mage would wear. Just my 2 cents. :D

Or, you know, history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointy_hat has an interesting little breakdown of the history of the pointy hat. (seriously).  A less interesting article discusses the history of hessian (burlap) http://en.wikipedia....iki/Burlap_sack

I really don't care about what mage hats are "supposed" to look like, but that doesn't mean I like the ridiculous things the design team came up with.

You spend an hour to make you mage look good in the character maker and then you have to put one of those thing on his head, it's a bit of a letdown :)

Perhaps. But, every other wear in the game looks just as one would expect in a standard fantasy game. It just makes the mage hat experiment even worse then it really is. :-)

How so? When did I once say anything bad about the designers? All I said is that I do not picture a mage hat the same way they do, and was curious as to where they got the idea from.

I was giving LotR as an example due to the D&D example. I was pointing out that his fantasy story came before D&D. If I wanted to actually compare it to the very first pointy hats, I would say what Sloth said. :)

Also if you'd like to get technical, the pointy hat that Merlin wore was givin to him first by disney. In history, Merlin was just an advisor, not even a Wizard.

While I'll agree that the headgear design for mages leaves something to be desired, I'm kind of glad Bio went an entirely different route than the usual fantasy stereotypes. It'd be interesting to hear where the idea came from, too, and if the decision to go that route was deliberate from the start or if it fit better into their world history/concept when they started on the art.

Yes! See that's what I wanted. I'm more interesting in hearing where the idea came from, rather than why they decided not to go the traditional wizard hat route. :)

I like that they are different, but the stitching looks like teeth, which makes me think a slug is eating my guy. Maybe a simple hood would be nice or something? Robes and such just fit since they need the mobility to perform spells.
