So my wife just ordered me both Neverwinter Nights Diamond and Oblivion game of the year edition for the PC.

I am a bit excited about both, NWN cause I have never played it and I hear it is very rich and in depth. Oblivion I only played on the 360 and PS3, and I am quite excited about getting into some of the mods that are out there. One in particular is interior lighting, makes the windows light up on buildings, just looks really nice and makes the world seem more alive.

Neverwinter Nights is set in the forgotten realms world, right? I am curious, does Drizzt, or more importantly, Entreri make an appearence at all?

Just kind of excited thought I would share and maybe get some feedback and thoughts from you guys.

(don't exactly know where you heard NWN is rich in depth, but it might be so, but in different way I may think).

So, your only question is about the appearances? Don't know for this Entreri person (never heard of him/her), but I am pretty sure Drizzt is not present in the game.

Yes, it's in FR.  No, neither Drizzt nor Entreri make an appearance.  I'm pretty sure it's a completely different timeframe.

It'll be interesting to see how you like NWN.  It was a great game, but it's graphics are horribly dated now.  Actually, I should even say the OC of NWN is mediocre, but the expansion campaigns are quite nice, especially HotU.  I still wish they would have finished Witches Wake.  Image IPB

As for Oblivion, I got the game for free and couldn't bear to play it for more than 30 minutes.  The boring just seeps into your bones.  Image IPB

You will be likely be unhappy if that's what you expect out of the original campaign. I bought NWN Diamond not expecting much, but was still disappointed. Apparently some of the user-made content is fantastic, though I haven't gotten around to trying any of it yet.

NWN OC wasn't that good, but I have to say SoU and HotU got better. Perhaps with more interactive party members. Still, it was quite a disappointment after Baldur's Gate.

Never tried any fan created mod though.

A few famous Forgotten Realms personages do appear in addition to a slew of minor characters that would only be familiar to people with a near encyclopedic knowledge of P&P lore and novels. For instance, Elaith Craulnober appears in official campaign, but he's largely unknown to anyone who hasn't read Elaine Cunningham's harper novels.

You'll also see Nasher and Klauth. The only two sorta famous NPCs in NWN are Halaster Blackcloak and a certain character I can't reveal as it's a huge HotU spoiler. Said character is that expansion's endboss.

Caladnei also appears in Wyvern Crown of Cormyr, but I'm not sure if premium modules are still available from BioWare. Sadly no Drizzt or Entreri. No Liriel, Gromph, any of the Seven Sisters or Companions of the Hall either. Not even Elminster amazingly enough.

Dark Lauron, I ran a NWN server myself. The mod that I hosted, had been running since about 2 weeks after it first came out and the server vault had 128,000,000 mb of player characters in it.

Nice. There was a group of public servers that ran the OC and expansions all day every day. It would reset at midnight. A bunch of people, including myself, would speed through all four chapters of the OC over and over again until we had dozens of characters at level 40.

I enjoyed NWN original campaign.
I did not like much the first expansion Shadows of Untrentide.
The second expansion Hordes of the Underdark is cool if you like epic action. I had lot of fun with it.

HotU is for level 15+ characters and sequel of NWN and SoU. So usually it's more fun to play a new char in NWN or SoU, and then later import it in HotU.

NWN failed for me, and I had been excited for that game for a long time before it came out.

Expansions and two persistant worlds didn't improve my opinion, nor a couple user-mods.

The game itself was blah to me (especially since you really are a single-person party, henchmen or no) and the ruleset (3.5) really turns me off.

Oblivion - sounds like you already enjoy it, so you should really like it on the PC. I made it through the story in Oblivion once. Had more fun with it than NWN.

Your mileage may vary.

I never played the NWN single player, but the Toolset, and persistant worlds force me to say that NWN is the greatest game ever made (yes, opinion).

The ability to play in infinite player created world... run, in real time, by their creators.. and can be dynamic depending on the actions of the players = to me, the most innovated game ever created.

Sadly, NWN2 crashed and burned.. and I never looked back.

Playing multiplayer was one thing that really made NWN go. That's part of why I wish/hope Bioware would hopefully find a way to add MP to DA:O at some point.

Yeah, the soul of NWN was it's multiplayer. Not really the persistent worlds (most of which were just rubbish attempts at being a real MMO), although the better ones were fun, but the organised games with a dungeon master, or just a party running through a pre-made module. Unfortunately, last time I looked NWConnections (where most of the games were organised) was pretty dead.

For god's sake, go to nwvault and download modules. And mods. LOTS OF MODS!
