Introduction
Hello Comrades,

Over the past few years the gaming industry has come up with different models to create a profit. While some of these methods are okay, other models seem to be lacking the intergrity. I will give an example such as capcom having disc locked content which is only unlockable by DLC. As you have heard such models cause an uproar in the gaming community but we cannot do anything about it because the gaming industry as a whole is based on the system of payments. It is not like open souce software because if my microsoft word stops working i can download libre office. Such things have led me to compare the payment systems of other software platforms to gaming platforms.

Free to play

These models allows the user to use the platform or play the system for no price. This is a model usually used for mmos and is used to draw people in. It should be noted that the game is free to play but will probably have a transaction based system for the most part. The game has items in-game that can be purchased with money. The bad part about this model is that the users see it as a pay to win model. I compare this enviroment to the mobile device platform. In the mobile device enviroment there are a lot of free applications available. Chances are that if you have found an application for a price you will find a free one with no price. These free apps are usually making their money by flashing ads in your face. The problem with the gaming platforms is that  you cannot say "Oh i didn't like this game? Well i will probably get a similar one for a lower price from this other vendor." Probably because it takes up much more money to develop these games than it would be for some simple software.

Open source

Ouya is a gaming platform that is being released. It comes with an android based sdk and it is encouraging developers to offer free games. Which brings me to an important point an that is open source games. If developers could come together in their free time just like how they do with software and develop open source games based on their interests, we could see the rise of such games. We could have an eviroment where people are doing this as hobbyists but still managing to make something tangible. We could literally post bugs that would be fixed by the community for the communiyt. A democracy based system in which every gamer has his own say.

Conclusion

I am worried that due to these transaction models. I feel like vendors will keep sending us these injust methods of selling their product and we have no choice because  "Capcom is the only game in town doing this." However if we establish an interest in open source games my assumption is that it might change the industry a bit. The software industry has changed so far especially for COTS.

OP HAS NO... never mind. The main issue I have with free to play games is, as you said, the game becomes a pay to win and that generally ends up being no fun for the people that cannot afford to pay. Sometimes, I can barely afford to pay $60 for a game. There is no way I could ever keep up with some one spending $60, $120, $240, and so on and so forth. The game ends up becoming stale and essentially unplayable for the player that is always getting beaten by the people that can afford to spend money.

No.

Pay to win or pay to become a member to get access to new stuff. Nothing is ever free, especially when it comes to games.

If it was free, it will be very limiting. That's when membership come in and the $$$ goes out.
