Was wondering since people are making levels and areas - are there any available for download? DragonAgeNexus seems to have barely anything in that regard, and while I know that are making is a slow process (I know, I tried), there should have been some made by now.

I think everybody's developing the stuff for use in their own creations, whether they're doing it solo, or as part of a team. Would be interesting to get a repository up, for people that just like to pump out levels and areas for others to use in their own mods.

If you're just looking for level examples, and see how people do it, you can download the core game level files here and browse around. I usually open up a level that I want to look similar to one of the in-game ones (whether its a ruin, a cave, a village etc.), look at the models and items they use to create it and jot them down. Usually fly through the level deleting pieces of it to get a better look at how the environment was built from the ground up.

Area examples you can find by changing the module to "Single Player" and opening up the Areas in the Area List.

We really should have some areas downloadable. That would speed up so many mods.

Making the area takes REALLY a lot of time, and not all of us have that much time to do it AND everything else (scripting, testing, cutscenes, etc...).

This makes me a sad camper. :(

It takes a while to make a really good-looking level. It doesn't take much time to make a prototype level that you can place your stuff into and get it all to work. You can go back and pretty up the level later when the other stuff is working.

The same lament was made early on in NWN2, and yet the use of prefabs never really took off even when they became generally abundant. Given the kind of open-ended design these toolsets provide for exterior level creation, I just don't think you get as much overlap between what an independent area designer would come up with and what any particular modder is looking for as often as you might think. Well crafted areas designed to fit the story of the module are important components to helping your module stand out, and I think this is why most modders decide to go that route. I know this was a concern for not a few modders. If the same area appears in several community mods, it can take away from the uniqueness of their own story's experience.

I think the best route is to form a team that includes a few people that enjoy area design and have the skills, time, and patience for it.

If there were levels to share how would you go about doing it? Is it possible to share a compiled level so that it can be used in areas, or can you only share uncompiled levels which would need to be compiled before being used in areas?

Level files aren't stored in the database, they're just standard files with a .lvl extension. They come paired with a .erf, too, so all you'd need to do is put those 2 files in a .zip or something and upload it somewhere for others to use.

Of course, that's the equivalent of giving out source code, so yeah it would need to be 'compiled' by loading it into the toolset and doing a Post to Local before you can use it in an area.

Right, I did that, but I would prefer to not require other people to have to compile the levels. I think I have come up with a way to share the file. Thanks for the help though Bibdy.

I think you can share alot of the small interior houses. while I doubt many will want the exact same exterior or larger dungeons.
