 It's not very complicated, but here it goes.

It's revealed that it isn't just darkspawn blood in the joining ritual chalice one drinks from, but blood drops from an Archdemon as well.

So how did the first Grey Wardens come to be Grey Wardens if there was no Archdemon blood available for their joinings?

-Need Grey Warden to kill an Archdemon
-Need Archdemon blood to become a Grey Warden

At one point we have to assume there was both no Grey Wardens and no Archdemon blood, so how did the first Grey Wardens come to be?
Was the joining ritual just different in the first blight?
If so, why add Archdemon blood to the joining ritual. What is the purpose of modifying the original joining ritual?

Grey Wardens know that the archdemon transfers its essence to a different darkspawn if killed by a non-warden. But one would assume that its corpse is still a corpse, and its blood still archdemon blood.

It doesn't have to be archdemon blood according to Gaider.

This thread gives some speculation as to how the first Grey Wardens might have figured things out.

Also, during the first Blight, if I remember correctly, they kept killing Archie. The problem was that he would shift to another body every time they did it. So they would have access to plenty of archdemon blood. They just couldn't do a permanent job.

Of course I could be wrong.

Mousestalker is right, the first Archdemon was killed several times by non grey wardens before some Tevinter mages figured out how to make the first Grey Wardens (presumably using blood gathered from those kills)

Or at least that it is how it was described in the codex, or maybe it was Riordan that said it.
