I just bought Dragon Age Ultimate Edition on PC and I am a complete noob to PC gaming. How can I get the party members to fight on their own, I have tried setting their tactics but that doesn't seem to be working either, keep having to manually tell them what to do and it's annoying.

See if they're in "hold" mode (a hand icon below the portraits), and switch it if so. Also, in the tactics page, check the menu at upper right corner and set everyone to "aggressive" or "ranged", depending on their role (I think "default" also works).
That should make them "fight on their own". Fighting well or badly, that's a different story.

It might seem a little daunting at first, but it is worth getting to grips with the tactics page. It really does pay dividends in getting your whole party to fight exactly as you want them to.
As Arkalezth said, if your companions are not fighting, the problem probably lies on that page. Make sure they have an appropriate behaviour selected.
In addition, you then have a list of orders which the selected party member will perform when the conditions for each are met. Each companion you get starts off with a pretty serviceable set of tactics, but they can usually be tweaked to make them better, and more suited to however you want to use them.
Here is a little thread that'll take you gently through tactics.

Ok thanks guys, I will just mess around on the tactics page and see what I can do
Seems the tactics were simpler to do on PS3 lol.
Edit: Figured out what was wrong, you know the Move Freely/Hold button thing below the portraits? well I thought it was on Move Freely because when I hover over it thats what it says, turns out it meant they were holding, so it not only explains why nobody would attack it also explains why nobody was following me lol.
Thanks for the help though, I really appreciate it. Especially being nice and not acting horrible because I am a noob

Glad you sorted it.
People on BSN are pretty friendly and willing to help newbies, generally.
If you have more questions, the biggest problem you're likely to encounter is getting any replies. The DA:O forum is fairly dead these days. Understandably, as it's a fairly old game.
