I'm sorry, but whoever programed this thing did a seriously ****** poor job. I've had nothing but problems since day one. I've got a mid 2012 model HP Dv7 Laptop with 16 Gigs of Ram, a relatively high end (for a laptop) NVIDIA graphics card, and a 2.6 GHZ Intel Core Processor.

For all of that, THE GAME RUNS LIKE ****. Frame rate slows to a crawl at random intervals for no discernal reason before speeding up to hyper speed just as mysteriously, my computer heats up like a furnance while running the damn thing, and half the time, the game freezes on start up. Disabling intro movies fixed the problem temporarily, but now it's back with a vengence.

Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty good game. There is just absolutely no reason I can think of why this thing should be more of a tempermental system hog than FREAKING SKYRIM, which looks roughly 1000 times as graphically complex as DA2.

Are there any mods, unofficial patches, or work arounds that can fix any of these issues?

Well, hey, sorry you feel that way, but we aren't a complaint department, not the mods forum, not the Tech discussions forum.  Everything t you want to know and to discuss is off topic in here.  There's a mods forum, but the Tech stuff has moved off Social onto Answers HQ.

From what you've mentioned, it seems the cpu of your laptop is overheating, hence it's throttling down to prevent damage. Then after it has cooled down a bit, it jumps up to full speed again. And the cycle continues. Try monitoring the temperatures to see if this is the problem. If so, try underclocking or using Throttlestop to keep the temperature in control and still get somewhat consistent FPS.
