TW2's main plot is short. Ignoring the side quests, you could finish it in under 10 hours.

I generally forgive it though, given all the plot divergence. There are basically two different act 2s to explore - and act 3 has so many determinant things feeding into it that I'm still not entirely what leads to what.
Witcher 1 was a little more straightforward with its 'paths.'

I was never bothered by its length myself. The writing makes up for it.
Besides, it has imo alot more replay value than the first game. Sure, you could side with the order or Scoia'tael or even remain neurtral. But the game mostly remains the same story wise.
When you take Roche's path or Iorveth's path, the story is quite different since you can see it from two different sides,

Witcher 1 could take a while, took me about 32ish hours my first runthrough doing most of the sidequests. Witcher 2 is significantly shorter, probably because of all the plot divergence. I'd say about 20ish hours for a first runthrough.
Wow you must have skipped so many sidequests... Both games took me at least twice as much.
Anyways this website is great if you wanna know how long it takes to finish a game:

I remember reading somewhere that they essentially shipped Witcher 2 earlier, since they were getting close to bankruptcy. But they mentioned there were plans for another act set in Dol Blathanna, the elven region.

I didn't say the plot was short as criticism.
Most RPGs focus more of their gameplay time on side quests than main quests ( look at Mass Effect, TES games, Fallout games etc. ).
I did feel the game was sort of short, though. Especially Act 3.

The new trailer is absolutely breathtaking. I am even a bit afraid of how good this game looks, and I am not only talking about the graphics here.
Comparisons are odious, but one aspect in which DA is far better than TW IP is the fandom. Its a bit surprinsing how hard is finding a good discussion about, for example, the last trailer. Or the confirmed features. The CD Projeckt forum is really limited. Anyway the longest (and more vitriolic) thread there is also about the ships
I suppose some things never change.
And yeah, Act 3 felt a bit short IMHO. Not a big problem, anyway.

Companions.
The Witcher games are all about Geralt. Geralt's friends are just sidekicks that if eliminated from the story would not impact on it. Even though Triss is lovable and hot, Geralt could always find another sorceress to replace her.
But Dragon Age? You try and take Alistair out of Origins.

I didnt wanted to compare games, the fandom thing was half a joke half a complain to vent my frustation about how difficult is to discuss the thing. But, if you want to reopen that can of worms...
I remeber playing DA2 shortly after TW2. I consider the latter a better game in many aspects, but IMO the characters are deeper in DA2, at least some of them. Companionship is the trademark of Bioware, and they are goddam right sticking to it. Besides, the writing in Bioware is always original stuff. They create a dozen of brand new characters (protagonist+companions+antagonists+so) per title, and to me at least 3 or 4 tends to be memorable. TW is "just" and adaptation (not saying adapting is easy), the characters are already there, and that source material is already great. So, all the praise to Gaider and cia.
But, except for characters... I enjoy more almost every other aspect in witcher games. Lore is more original (although the source books borrows a lot!), griitty ambientation feels superior and more beliavable, the charisma of the protagonist is overwhelming, superior graphics dont hurt, either...
I'm sure this has been done before, but for DA is The Avengers, more fun, more whedonesque, more light (at least formally). TW is Nolan's Batman.
Said that, I prefer Avengers AND Batman than just Batman ![]()

I'm thinking of getting into the first two games this summer. How long is the playtime from start to finish for both? Are the books good reads?
TW1 is about 40-60 hrs if you don't dawdle. TW2 is around 25-30 hrs.

The most interesting thing about Iorveth is the Kakashi Sensei eye cover.
And his dragon romance.

You're complaining about a Witcher 2 spoiler in a Witcher 3 thread?

Yep.
You spoiled it for me. When I saw the dragon in TW2 trailer, I wanted to romance it. But now I'm not sure. I'm not buying this game.

Geralt did have a companionship of sorts at one point in the novels, but all of them with the exception of Dandelion are dead now.

Could we please make use of spoiler tags for the benefit of those here who haven't yet read the novels or played the games?

Just checked my 360 data, last time I played TW2 was June 20th of last year.
Gonna be a year soon. Guess I should finally fire up that Iorveth playthrough.

Iorveth's is better, despite picking him in Act 1 not making any sense from an In Character point of view.

Yeah, I noticed that when I played the game. I felt like not leaving with Roche and Ves was a bit nonsensical, given the prologue and events of Act 1.

Completed my Iorveth playthrough this morning. I really enjoyed it, I only prefer the Roche path slighty more.
But I'm definitely gonna import both playthroughs to see how it it will affect The Witcher 3 ![]()
