Await the Steam summer sale, you'll probably be able to pick them up real cheap. Expect to put some time in getting to grips with UI and combat (start on easy).
You might use the first game in combination with a gamepad and Xpadder, worked for me (even if you have to keep your keyboard near you).
 
If you dislike Game of Thrones and similar kinds of fantasy, forget about it.

Question. Would you recommend the Witcher games to someone who thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of the Elder Scrolls, Fable and Dragon's Dogma?

On another note, I'm looking to pick up the english translations of the Witcher books, I've never read them before and I'm curious if anyone knows what I can expect from the writing style. I enjoy the games and I'm curious how different the tone, characters, themes, etc are in the books. As I understand it, the author of the books and the devs of the games have no working relationship, so I am curious how different the books might be.

 

Instant recommendation if you ask me! Sapkoski is amazing writer plus the books and games support one another rather well (after all, CD Project "continues" the story of Geralt after the books).

They are read in this order:

 

The Last Wish

The Sword of Destiny (first two books collection of short stories about Geralt)

Blood of Elves (starts the saga about the ashen haired girl named Ciri and her destiny)

Times of Contempt

Baptism of Fire

Tower of Swallow

Lady of the Lake (ends the "Ciri saga")

Season of Storms (not published yet in other languages than polish)

It takes awhile for official "English" translations and apparently some of the flavor is lost along the way, according to multilingual acquaintances.

 

I have Last Wish, Blood of Elves, and Times of Contempt. Need to read the latest, greatly enjoyed the other two. Have lots of prep to do for W3's release, but it's getting closer! Almost halfway through 2014 already.

Those idiot english publishers who skipped the sword of destiny book......    

I cant fathom why they did it because the book is a great read and it sets up the story for blood of elves and blood of elves continues almost directly from where the sword of destiny ends.

 

Well, no worries my friend because the fan translations can be found here and they are suprisingly well made ones so you can easily fill in the gaps of your witcher-knowledge.

 

Once you have read the Sword of Destiny you can go buy the recently published times of contempt and baptisim of fire english versions.

 

ANd when you read them also, you can finally go to read the last two books as fan translation also. You dont have to wait a thing!

Interesting read. There was actually a Witcher game appropriately called "The Witcher" that was being developed in 1997 by a Polish studio led by Adrian Chmielarz of People Can Fly (now Epic Games Poland). The difference was that this game was going to be a direct transition of the books whilst The Witcher series of CD Projekt are their own tale set in the universe. He praises what CD Projekt have done and thanks them for giving him some of the best gaming memories with The Witcher 2.

Just wanted to mention it: Witcher I and II are on sale on Steam, 1.6 and 4 dollars respectively. So if you want to gift them to friends, this is is a good time .

This would be a hopeless plea...but let's bury it. Because spoilers. Let's respect the devs and not talk about the leak.

Yeah, the leak is pretty bad. Thankfully, no details and in-depth descriptions of the storyline, but you can still get spoiled by the "general" name. They have a list of all characters, beasts [detailed] and quests [with names of the writers responsible]. Some stuff about the alpha, Geralt's hair, PRIMA guide checklist and so on.

 

100% genuine unfortunately as there is no way that someone without access to the development team could have/know all this stuff.

 

EDIT: Woops, I agree with Slimgrin. But you have to be on your toes, guys and gals :/ Some people will try to spoil the game for you.

This is sad, things like this shouldn't happen with good developers like CDPR or BioWare (like what happened with the Mass Effect 3 leak in 2011).

 

It's a shame that I have to be neurotic about this thread from now on. :/
