amazing. I've never played a Witcher game, but I plan to buy this one. Do you guys think I'd need to play the first two?

I definitely recommend the first two. It just becomes more engaging since you'll be more engaged into the Witcherverse.
However, they did say on the stream that the Witcher 3 game will include a small book of a sorts explaining everything that's happened up until Witcher 3.
