Yup Yup. Its just preference really.

What you can't argue the design of platinum vs gold? I agree that arguing a players preference is nonsensical.

Like why was it designed as boss spam when many of the most dangerous units on each faction are the mook level enemies?

Why are you forced to play multifaction when this units were never designed to interact with each other? Wouldn't a platinum setting with individual factions preset as much or more of a challenge?

Why is multifaction limited to platinum? Shouldn't players who only want to play bronze, silver, or gold be allowed to experiment with multifaction enemies?

The balancings of kits get even more thrown out of wack when making the jump to platinum.

These are all valid points that should be discussed

I think platinum should not have been a multi faction level. I would have enjoyed just one faction totally upgraded, faster, multiple of each, different objective types limited to platinum etc. I dont disagree with platinum being kind of lazy in design. In matter of fact it would have been SOOO cool if they even had a new enemy per faction that ONLY showed up on Platinum. This way Platinum would have been a really niche difficulty where you see things that you could only see on Platinum. An example are the Dragoons.

It would have been cool if they were only showing up on Platinum thus making them unique to the level and would thus make other players excited to go up to Platinum because they see things that they normally would not see on lower difficuties.

This in my opinion should have been the way Platinum should have been designed. Something unique and different thatn the other levels and hard but revealing things that you cannot see on lower difficulties.

Why does the general consensus matter to you (assuming such a thing even exists)?

Good question.  The short answer is that I don't / it doesn't, in that I will continue to play the game as I am, in the way that I find fun, and hold my own opinions on what makes a good player, which may of course change over time.

But I did still make this thread, and the longer answer is that I have played this game a lot over the last couple of months and I'm wondering what the future holds.  I play another game (a game you won't care about) to a very a high level, and in that game after a particualr threshold, high level play makes the game extremely rewarding.

It doesn't seem long ago that I was having a blast in Bronze and wondering if I could really cut it in Silver, and I had no reason to think I'd ever get beyond that.  But I've played so much that I've gone through a number of stages beyond that, and while I find some matches extremely fun, I also lose all enjoyment for the game when it gets too easy, i.e. when it becomes a high-score fest.  So I was wondering if players here (who will generally, at least 50%, probably 90% or more, be much better than I am) aim for developing skills in this game other than outscoring each other.  But examples like the following from Ziegrif:

Ziegrif wrote...
For me high level play with pretty much zero chances of failure and the situation that Air Quotes described has been the most boring thing in ME3MP that I have experienced.

The better your team is the bigger a gun you have to use to keep up and be more useful.
I like using a lot of lower end guns and end up playing a lot of Geth due to that to compensate on dmg.

...

... suggest that I probably won't fund the game much fun once (if) I reach this level.  I'll still poke around here learning stuff while it's still fun to do so, but I'm not gonna go out of my way to learn all the tech and improve if all improving means is ultimately swamping a respawn point before my teammates.

I hope that doesn't come across as rude btw, like I said different players enjoy different things, I'm just wording it in a way that explains why I wouldn't necessarily enjoy it.

Also thanks for all the replies guys and girls.  I am reading them all even though I'm not replying to them all.

It only really matters when someone is at the bottoms of the scoreboard with under 30-40k with no medals in a UUG/UUP match.

Yeah.

But if someone only gets like 20,000pts through 10 rounds you have to give them a lot of credit because that is very hard to accomplish.  And just like soloing, someone shouldn't claim that it is easy before they actually try it. :)

With good players in a team it all boils down to who gets to the juiciest spawn first, clears it and predicts and gets to another one faster.

This pretty much sums it up.

I suspect some of the threads you may have seen came from long time players frustrated with the quality of a public game, I understand from playing with friends that sometimes pug, it really wears them down playing public games at gold +.

There is a group of players on BSN that play together and often post that they beat someone else in the team because they are a scrub or whatever, many may not realize these guys are friends and it`s a poke in good fun, I fully understand many may not read it that was but those of us that have been here since March + or -, know each other.

The only score that matters is my own, being an older gamer it tells me how my performance is with that kit and weapon, after 1,000+ hours I know around where I should be personally, I also love games where our scores are really close, a couple of friends and I from here often notice at the end of a game how close our score is, i think the record in gold is 18 points....this is just for fun and nothing else.

I play 99% of my gold with friends from BSN, 100% Plat........extraction (full) on gold is a given and at this point always with one exception, gold was getting a little to run of the mill so we broke into teams and took lower level players into gold to help them get credits, show them the ropes, add a personal challenge and we find it very rewarding. Plat extraction is the vast majority, not always full because we have taken some of these silver players into this level at their request as they are pretty damn good players.

I started playing Plat this year, I think I now have around 100 extractions + or -, because I love playing mixed enemies. I recently did a shout out to BSN to add more plat level players and the respons was over the top, there are many that I run with that are simply far better players than I, they have been gaming longer and they have age on their side, I think that is great, I strive to become better and yes my personal score is reflecting that but I have never had anyone say anything.

I have the confidence I am a very good team player and I do hear that often, that does not translate as being number one in score, yes it does happen and that is great, my personal goal going in is to have fun and keep learning.

I only play a couple a matches a day now. People bit*h about pugs, but I'm tired of the spawn nukes, TGIs, and everything else that's made this fairly boring. Once you're competent at the game, it's time to move on. Sucks.

This is an example of what I just don't get.  If someone outscores you they get Friend Request?  What happens if next time you outscore them 4 to 1, do you remove them?  I would have thought you'd focus on how they play rather than what score they get.

If I outscore them 4 to 1, I must have gotten the username wrong :P.  It's abundandtly clear when someone is not a team player, I don't attempt to add them in that case, but 99 times out of 100 they're the ones in last place anyway.  I've never seen this fabled 'bad team player' who scores 150k a match.

Yup Yup. Its just preference really.

Pretty much. I cna play platinum just fine, but i prefer gold. I think its more fun becuase eveyrhting works on gold so u can use fun layouts. I'll asari melee my way thorugh gold, but i cna't get it to work on plaitnum. gold = more fun IMO

So far you are the best Asari Melee players I have seen. I have to get in on that melee action some time. It was fun seeing you get nothing but melee kills on Gold. We should do an all Asari Melee game on Gold soon.

I played one with 2 friends and a random and on wave 2 i killstreaked a spawn and i was liek the random must be like WTF just happened. I got pretty lucky i was behind the guardians and someone set off a BE of my AF then i meleed and teh whole spawn died. it was hilarious.

Bro. Im hitting you up this week. 4 Asari melee action...lots of moans though...doesnt bother me though. ;) So going to record it.

and props to gollum for coming up wiht this build

The only other multiplayer experience I've had was in DarkSouls PvP and co-op and that was a blast while it lasted. ME3 MP is my second multiplayer experience.

I don't know. Maybe competing for scores is fun for some? And perhaps scoring high does require a high level of skill, which depends on other skills acquired over time? When I'm in a PUG I sometimes try to compete out of fun, not always. But that motivation for playing this game differes for me from day to day.

But examples like the following from Ziegrif:

All individual opinions - none better or worse than the other.

... suggest that I probably won't fund the game much fun once (if) I reach this level.  I'll still poke around here learning stuff while it's still fun to do so, but I'm not gonna go out of my way to learn all the tech and improve if all improving means is ultimately swamping a respawn point before my teammates.

Whatever works for you, I guess. I exclusively work with PUGs and, mainly, the dynamics of that has kept me interested till now (and there is the maxing the manifest, and getting the promotional weapons, and accumulating some cash for the next DLC, if there is one - the list goes on...).

If you want minions to support your newly acquired, self-proclaimed godhood, you should be a little nicer to us commoners. Only worshipping the hand that feeds us, not the hand that beats us. You really should decide what kind of deity you want to be.

silence, peasant.

on topic - good players have a feel for who belongs in what difficulty.  It's not just score, but how the player behaves in-game.  I can even tell the difference between a gold regular and a platinum regular after maybe 2 games

Playing for the objectives, working together, staying alive, get extracted is more important than the top score.
Who cares if I have the top score at the end after being sync-killed on waves 8-9-10 (reference to myself :-( ) ?

Top scorers from BSN tend to do so because they're good.

Top scorers in PUGs tend to do so because they happen to know how to rambo well and that certain kits are really good.

It's a team game.

I don't care whether I'm top or bottom of the scoreboard as long as -

1. We all extract.
2. I feel like I've contributed.

The Volus shield boost spammer makes a mockery of higher score equals better player. If he's kept the other three alive to do the damage he's made a huge contribution, even if he's only scored 20k.

A friend and I played a game with two randoms a while back. One was a Destroyer who was so desperate to get top score that he basically was a troll. He would not help on the first two objective waves, running off to missile spawn points the moment an objective wave began, forcing the enemies to respawn closer to the objective.

On the wave 10 objective, which was delivery, he grabbed the package, then headed straight for the thickest group of enemies and used his last two missiles. He then just stood out in the open shooting things while not walking toward the LZ. This lasted for nearly 4 full minutes (and it was the first package!).

My friend and the other random revived him at first to get revive medals, but I finally got tired of it (after the 9th time the guy got downed) and took the package from him and ran for the LZ without reviving the little troll. He got top score, all right. And the whole team got as little money as possible for the match. But at least Little Mister Try-Hard got his top score! That's what counts!

Yes, I mad. /rant.

Full extraction is better than top score. Quickly completing objectives is better than top score.

It does not matter how much score you get, it is what you do in that game. You can be the dedicated medic that just heals people up and thanks for your deeds, you made the team to survive on the other hand there might have been a score hoarding teamplayer that just rushed into the enemy crowd to score some heavy points because he knew that he´d be rescued by you so no, score is irrelevant in the end.

Well. It means both good and bad depending on the game.

When you're playing bronze or silver with a bunch of friends and you set up a rule for no kill stealing, whoever has the highest score is either the better player or they're lucky and ran into all the enemies.

When you're playing Gold with a bunch of friends, and the same rule applies, higher score means better player because all the enemies aren't really weaksauce.

When you're playing any difficulty with a bunch of PuGs, it means either because a lot of players are kill-stealers.

Basically, higher score could mean either a good player or a kill-stealing ****.
