Getting straight to the point, I just got this message on xbox live after asking a friend new to ME1 what kind of character they were playing.

Posted Image

They were playing a soldier Sheploo cause they didn't even know they had options. Right now they're kind of regretting being eager to dig their teeth into the game cause they feel cheated out of customising their own experience, which likely would've made their character feel more personal to them.

Iconic characters have a certain risk when used exclusively. I don't think iconic characters are bad through and through - quite the opposite actually - but this kind of customisation needs to be emphasised in marketing I believe. Even DA2, which promoted it more than ME did, seemed to mostly just tell the idea that you could choose which class Hawke would be. Since the CC is literally unskippable (quite skippable in ME) it'd be obvious things went deeper once in the actual game, but this event makes me wonder.

If my friend (hardly a casual gamer by any means, check out that gamerscore! it's several times bigger than mine) now feels they've missed quite a bit of the experience even though they're enjoying the game, how many never picked the game up in the first place cause they wanted customisation and this focus on Sheploo and Garrett Hawke made them unaware it was possible to truly make the protagonist your own?

Yeeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh xbox!!!

O/T : There isn't quite enough customization if you ask me. The devs need to implement true customization of character models, like curves, height, weight and bust size. Looking over at isabela was just depressing.

Yeah.

Since they include character customisation, I have to assume they think it is an attractive feature that'll win them sales So I can't see the logic in not making sure that potential customers know about it.

When it comes to sheploo I think it kind of worked better than doing a malleable hero thing. He is very recognizable (despite being frowny white dude with black/brown hair).

Think that a game series like DA, where the protagonist changes, might benefit more from pushing customization.

I got drawn to KoTOR (the original Xbox game) based on the "Choose your destiny" commercials. I think that's a great feature of Bioware games.

Interesting question, but if your friend missed the rather obvious way to customize Shepard maybe we also need to talk about making that more prominent.

I agree that maybe in advertising they should show that the PC is customisable, but in terms of in-game customisation, I think the DA and ME series have made it pretty clear. This specific case seems more the fault of your friend than the marketing.
