Well, this thread has some undertones. lol

I chuckled.

Constantine the Last has the best legend about him, of course. That's always fun.

Justinian, to borrow a phrase from /tg/, Got **** Done, reconquering much of the former Western Empire, got the Haghia Sofia built, and compiled Roman law into a single civil code.

Basil II, because he's got a cool nickname even if I'm sure the Bulgarians are none too fond of him.

Aurelian, for basically staving off complete collapse for 200 years.

Trajan, which needs no explanation.

And I'm sorry, Nero and Caligula were both insane. There's no getting around that. Nero's been subjecto Historical Villain Upgrade, as TV Tropes puts it, but he was still a crap emperor and mostly incompetent. At least Diocletian balanced ****ry with competent administration.

I think I'm the only one who can't stand Augustus... he was a power hungry a-hole who has shown his devious machinations beautiful in his res gesta. I'm always on side with Marcus Antonius .
Well all Roman Emperors were crazy chicken who killed each other but I would say that my favorite is Trajan (who has really achieved something) and Marcus Aurelius (who wasn't completely insane).
Funny emperors were also Elagabal (namby-pamby), Nero (failed actor) and Caracalla (I mean look at his busts.. he is always grumpy because of his Hercules worship lol).

Scipio Africanus, Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator, Marcus Valerius Corvus, Mamercus Aemilius Mamercinus, Aulus Postumius Albus Regillensis, and Marcus Furius Camillus.

I'm not fond at all of tyrants and kings, which is all you have after Gaius Julius Caesar.

Favorites: Augustus, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, Antoninus Pius, Septimius Severus, Diocletian, Constantine I.

Least favorites: Nero ('moron'), Commodus

Also Constantine wasn't the reason of fall of Roman Empire. Surprisingly I like the Orthodox Byzantine Empire more than Roman Empire itself.

I actually fins muyself largely agreeing to this list. One cant judge emperors in ancient times to the moral standards of today.

Augustus - Octavian was a shrewd, brilliant and astute politician. He was of short stature, well proportioned and he possessed that commodity so rare in rulers - grace. Through cold, hard political calculation he was able to achieve ultimate power in Rome.

At the time of Caesar’s assassination, Octavian held no official position. Only after he marched on Rome and forced the senate to name him consul, was he established as a power to be reckoned with. He managed to expand the Empire not only through land, but also in a working honest government and a sound currency system and so much more.

Any of the emperors who used Caesar in their title, because from that we got Caesar salad dressing, Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and Little Caesars Pizza (Pizza).

I'd vote for Trajan - or maybe Vespasian, Hadrian and/or Caracalla. If you're wondering why I picked them, it's because of their architectural achievements.

Actually, I'd even add in Nero for the Domus Aurea, but he was kind of a jerk. He did do some things to, ironically, improve fire safety in Rome by making changes to building codes and how the city was laid out if I remember correctly from that Nero-related documentary that I watched.

Caligula of course. If your going to become a mad dictator with a crazy god complex, you might as well go big or go home.

Trajan. Took a rotting Empire, revitalized and expanded it.

Julius had some great successes, but was ultimately murdered by his friend...

Augustus had a pretty fair plate to start with. It's not hard to do well if things are already going well..

Marcus Aurelius ended the whole "adopt a son and have him be experienced and established" deal which was a major step towards Rome's downfall...

Nero was bat**** insane (!). He persecuted many more groups than early Christians, that's just what he is best known for. He did have his own mother executed, you know.

Constantine.. eh. "Let's abandon Rome!"

Graham was actually quite smart, but he believed in God, therefore, he was actually dumb.
