Guns being a weapon specialization... obviously they would be powerful but slow to reload and you could have bayonet skills to make up for it.

Nope. Doesn't fit in with the DA:O fantasy world setting (at least, with what's been presented in the game).

I personally hate guns in a fantasy setting like DA:O, NWN, BG, etc.

Sorry to say it, but I think it would be hideous.

Other than Arcanum, magic and firearms seldom, if ever get mixed.  To get the equivalent _effects_ of a projectile weapon, you'd use Magic.  (Stonefist)  Everybody knows that.

Can't find a new Science if nobody is looking for it.

Guns I think do not fit in with their technological evolution. Mostly because there is no evidence that cannons exist quite yet. I believe the gun spawned from a want for cannons to be more portable, thus being made smaller and so on....yeah I won't bore you with that history stuff.

I also heard this, Qunari have canons aboard their warships.

Not sure where though...

addiction21 is correct, there is a codex entry available just before Landsmeet that quotes the Quanri having cannons. This does not mean guns are available in the sense of rifles and the like. Taking IRL history into account, cannons existed a while before the basic black powder rifle became available.

Gun's in a sword & sorcery game will be a total disaster and would be a distasteful combination.

The Qunari having cannons makes some sense, if what Sten says about Qunari mages is true. Lacking the firepower of a mage, the Qunari would have reason to explore a technological way of producing ranged destruction. As stated earlier in this thread, however, the existence of cannons dos not mean that personal firearms need exist, or indeed make an sense.

In all fairness, the Might & Magic series had guns, and futuristic laser ones, no less! It fit the plot, though (I'm remembering MM6 mostly here). I just don't think that DA:O has a vibe that would fit guns of any sort.

No.

However, I wouldn't mind magical crossbows that shoot fireballs. :-)

Why go with guns when you have mages? Mages are mobile, do more damage, faster rate of fire, more use in general support and have an infinite source of ammunition (lyrium doesn't count, you can regen naturally if you're patient).

Also, the Tevinter Imperium (from what I've read) is based on the Byzantine Empire where as the Qunari are rather like the Ottoman Empire. At the fall of Constantinople, with exception of those cannons, it was pretty much your standard bows, crossbows, spears, swords and so forth. The cannons were merely for the siege against the walls. I'm guessing the designers were probably going for that type of angle when they mentioned it.

Anyways, I'd rather have a ship full of mages than be weighed down by cannons.

Steam is mentioned in the game but I guess guns don't fit well in the setting.

If anything, the dwarves would be the ones wielding guns like in Sacred and Arcanum.

True enough Sloth but the opposite holds true also.  I am not a purist so it would all comee down on if and how it was implemented into the world.

I am trying to think of the game or book it was that they had something like guns but were purly mytical. More like something that allowed a mage to channel and focus their power into to deliver a blast that was stronger then the magic they put into it. Just slips my mind atm.
