Nothing is distasteful from the get-go. It depends on the execution and how well it's balanced with fantasy gameplay. It also makes fore a great dynamic. Those who have the gift of magic have the greatest power and can rule over those without magical skills. Science and engineering are the tools of the ungifted.
Imagine flint lock pistols, muskets, and even revolvers clashing with lightning and fire. It has Tolkien cliche written all over it and I guess it sounds like that Warhammer game but if any dev can make more out it, it's Bioware.

Gun's in a sword & sorcery game will be a total disaster and would be a distasteful combination.
Tell that to Fable 2!
Fable 2 is the only reason I bring it up because I LOVED how they integrated the flintlock and other early pistols and rifles in with swords and magic. I agree with others that for Fereldan and the outlying areas the development of guns is unreasonable to think of... but for the dwarves who cannot use magic and the quinari who do not accept it they seem like reasonable developments at least to me and could prove tough to defeat if the quinari decide to launch another military campaign. I just thought it might be interesting, especially if it was a dwarf only specialization to make up for how they can't use magic. Well that's my rant lol.

The Qunari having cannons makes some sense, if what Sten says about Qunari mages is true. Lacking the firepower of a mage, the Qunari would have reason to explore a technological way of producing ranged destruction. As stated earlier in this thread, however, the existence of cannons dos not mean that personal firearms need exist, or indeed make an sense.
More like something that allowed a mage to channel and focus their power into to deliver a blast that was stronger then the magic they put into it. Just slips my mind atm.

There is also the considration of the Qunari honour system. Would they even consider using firearms as personal weapons? From all we can tell so far they don't have a 'serf' or 'common' class that participates in battle to dilute thier 'sword honour' society.

lol smartass
They breach loaded something I would say is very similiar to lyrium so it was a little more then wands. Breach load for those that do not know think of a double barrell shotgun where you place the round at the back of the barrell instead of in a chamber or clip. (I guess I shoulda mentioned this the first time)
And if the internet suddenly implodes thats my bad everyone. I am tearing thru it atm the moment trying to find what this was. 28 allready I am having memory lose and have carpel tunnel

I see that as a very good possiblity honestly. Maybe if they had another caste that had some "pew pew honor" that would be the gun users

Guns being a weapon specialization... obviously they would be powerful but slow to reload and you could have bayonet skills to make up for it.
Not trying to be rude or anything, but this made me giggle.

I play first person shooters when I want to play a game with guns, they are made for that purpose and make the entire game around the premise so it works well.
A mixture is not something I would ever be interested in playing.

guns would just be the beginning, pretty soon the dwarves would be reseacrhng dynamites, bombs, and possibly rocket launchers in the game. then we'd have cannons, we'd have missiles and soon we'd have weapons the power of a nuclear bomb in the game.
alright, no guns in DA:O then.

Is it really "sword honor" or is it just honor in being a warrior. If the warriors would use guns, they would probably be as clingy to them.
Edit: Ergo, there is no glory and achievement in being a warrior, you simply are a warrior.

Guns dont kill fantasy... At least, the early low tech ones. Whenever someone mentions guns everyone assumes they mean the fully automatic death machines of today.

I think it was Churchill that said that longbows were not outmatched by guns until the first world war.

So if they did introduce early firearms they would be weak and very slow and no one would use them.

the only game i liked that had guns mixed into a fantasy setting was shadowrun on the snes and even that was future based but still worked
PnP shadowrun is probably the best balanced RPG system I've ever played. Shame it would never work as a CRPG since combat is just too lethal.
