Do you both have all of the DLCs downloaded? If you/him have one of the DLCs and the other doesn't then it won't let you join each others lobby.

oh i've had all the DLC since they came out, and i was just playing matches with them today too, it gets to where i select what character to join as and gets stuck on the "joining game" screen afterwards :/
