How long did it take to get your first Gold Solo? (long as in attempts made, not your actual time in-match)

I actually decided to get my solo banner a couple weeks back, i managed to get both Golds done in a weekend after checking off my last Silver (that same weekend), the other matches i'd done last year but got bored so i just went to back public games for a while.

It's funny but when you're in a public game and everyone else gets dead, completing the rest of the round isn't daunting because you know after the wave, the others will re-spawn. Funny how that feeling changes when you fire up a Gold solo lol

Anyway my tips, these worked for me and i assume would work for everyone...

1) Treat every solo wave exactly the same as you would in an public game, it's easy to get cocky/make silly errors when you haven't got others watching you play.

2) I know it's boring but make sure you have at least a couple Silver solos under your belt, it's better to learn any issues and complications in these shorter matches than a long Gold one.

3) Infiltrator with Tactical Cloak specced for duration, the Turian Ghost is ideal if you ask me but i guess any will do. The cloak makes any of the hack related objectives fairly simple to do and using his heavy melee trick to carry items, makes the Recovery objective a doddle too. Damage from the cloak is also useful for the Assassination. Escort is the hardest task but the Stim Packs will help, you don't need to max them out, just as long as you have some points in them.

4) Bring the Harrier and whatever you want as a back up, you should always be keeping your Harrier topped up but you never know. Take the Acolyte if your class has no shield/barrier stripping ability, again the TGI has Overload, which works a treat. Extended Barrel and Armour Piercing Mod on both.

5) I think Vancouver is the ideal map, naturally designed like a circuit which you can just do laps around. It also has a lot of cover so you shouldn't get caught out in the open too much plus it has the advantage of raised areas, this gives you bonus of height and can block enemy fire from lower areas.

6) Faction: Reapers, i think they're the easiest but watch out for the Banshees!

7) Equipment: Armour Piercing or Incendiary (your call) - I used lvl 3 in both my runs, so lvl 4 can only be better. I used Warfighter package lvl 5, so i had an extra two Stim packs and a small boost to AR damage. AR amp lvl 3. Cyclonic Mod - again i only used lvl 3.

8) Do you know how the wave budget works? I've never read the proper explanation of it but afaik killing the toughest bosses early isn't always the right way to go because they'll just re-spawn. Instead go for mid level bosses until you've burned through the budget, Ravagers were my target, burst the sacs and watch them die in one clip. Then you should be left with the Banshees at the end, strip barriers and aim for the face.

9) Set aside at least an hour+ for your first solo, your second should be shorter, assuming you want the banner. Have a drink and maybe snacks at your side, cus u will get bored, oh and make sure you use the bathroom before playing ;) [some music might be good but not loud enough to distract you!]

It's really not that bad once you know how to go about things, it's just very time consuming and rather boring to be frank. Practice makes perfect but there's not that much to learn. Try not to use your Cobra Missiles unless you absolutely need them, ideally have most of them saved (if not all) for wave 10 and one for wave 11 (for emergency LZ clearing). Likewise with Medi-Gels, if you die in the early waves, sack off the game and start a fresh - you never know how many u might need for wave 10. Keep your head down in wave 11, it's just a waiting game then.

That's about it really, try it out and let me know how you get on :)

tl;dr: I suck at solos. Gold solo is evading me like Captain Ahab's white whale. Any advice beyond learn2play? And how many times did you try to solo Gold before succeeding?

Kroguard was invincible against geth before the staggering changes around retaliation. Manual retargeting time for the mattock works against the twitchy cerb troops. Glacier is a punishing map for solos since the size of it keeps the pressure up through the game. White would probably be better against geth to break up the sightlines and herd them around. Rio funnels the enemy through 3 straight paths so if you are caught in any of them, the rest of the mob will catch up easily. I would recommend reactor or vancouver for righting reapers, giant is still nice but the slower stuff like brutes and ravagers would be trailing along the central circular route for your routes of escape so that's one thing to consider.

Kits I would suggest for geth are kroguard or a sniper SI. Reaper would be TGI harrier with ap 4, you can live without the ar rail amps as a infily kit. Batarian or krogan soldier would make nice fire and forget classes with inferno nades. Just chuck two nades at each brute or ravager you see and run. They'll be half dead the next time you encounter them. Batarian has ballistic blades to keep husks/cannibals/marauders off you while krodier has carnage for added fire explosions. Don't recommend taking on cerb for now since they pack the most ranged firepower among the 4 factions plus derpgoons and on-host phantom DR makes it harder in a solo game.

Lastly I would advice you to be patient and be paranoid. Take down two or three mooks and move on, check your flanks and rear in between shots. A quick glance during RC takes a second or so and could easily save you from an errant spawn. Come extraction waves just run laps around the map and laugh at their silly attempts to stop you.

Good luck and good hunting N7.

I hear you, OP! I've made 6 unsuccessful attempts at Kroguard/Reaper/Ghost over the past month. The farthest I've gotten is wave 9. In the past 2 weeks it seems like Banshees jump through the walls and sync kill me more often, so I might change to Geth. OTOH, I might try the GE, since I've used him to do 5 Bronze solos and 1 Silver solo already. I do worry about the squishy factor, though.

Good luck!

Way back when people said the Wraith sucked, me and my Drell Adept did our first solo.

It was definitely one of the more satisfying experiences on this game.

Don´t know why, but I actually made it on my first attempt. Geth/Kroguard/Giant. Then I tried TGI, but failed on wave 3 thanks to pre nerf dragoons, then I was angry and took Kroguard again on Ghost. Just let me say, I never ever want to solo against Geth again. Ever.
I would say, try to stay calm, try to be patient, retreat when it gets dense. I was on the move the whole time. Backpedalling in circles, using charge whenever my shields dropped. Slow, carefull approach worked for me. Using soft cover whenever possible, for example when I was reloading my gun. Practically everytime I died, it was because I was reckless and stayed in one place too long.
Fingers crossed for youImage IPB

I'm still working n that. I've gotten close a couple of times with the Kroguard, Batguard and Asari Huntress. I'm thinking I'll take the latter. Made it pretty far with her on my last attempt with no Cyclonic Mods and only 1 Ops pack. Reapers on a big map for kiting.

Also, bah pc elitists. Come down to consoles and try a Gold solo. Dare ya.

Took me 3 attemps. 1st one failed with an instakill by a Phantom after the objective completed on Wave 10. Second time ended on wave 11 by an instakill by a Brute. 3rd time was the charm, but took me 1hr 40 minutes! All 3 I used the Human Engineer with a GPS/Acolyte. My 2nd successful Gold solo was with the TGI/Harrier and took 1hr 8 minutes.

First solo ever was glacier/geth/gold with kroguard and a reegar before bombers. ~23 minutes. It took me 4 more attempts to duplicate it.

2nd attempt: Failed. I used Geth Infiltrator with Piranha.

3rd attempt: Success. I used Geth Infiltrator with Geth Shotgun.

4th attempt: Success. I used Geth Infiltrator with Geth Shotgun.

1st attempt a few days back FQE/Giant/Reapers. Took way too long, and I can't bring myself to do the second.

Fourth try. I used TGI with Harrier vs. Reapers on Giant. Basically my kiting and need for ammo dovetailed nicely - every time I needed ammo I also needed to GTFO of where I was.

A veteran Gold player such as yourself can do this. You just have to get used to a different rhythm and it seems like you're almost there from what you wrote.

My first attempt I died on Wave 9, mostly because I refused to run away and tried to fight my way out of every pack of Geth firing away at me.

(was playing Kroguard there are about three other classes that I could probably do it with Vorcha Soldier, Asari Huntress, and Batarian Vanguard... but I didn't want to risk it and lose the time that goes into a solo Gold match, the time is really the hardest part of it in my opinion)

The second attempt was a piece of cake when I accepted the need to occasionally run away, and then flank and re-engage the enemy.

2nd attempt, Geth trooper no-flamer build with Javlin against Geth on Giant. I died once. Next solo I actually got the 10 waves survived medal. Surprised myself.

My first attempt was against Rippa's and I failed because a Banshee took her sweet time moving towards me in a Target elimination objective and I didn't pay attention to the clock, which ran out on me.

3rd try took me 65 minutes. Follow up took me 45. I find the hardest objective to be the pylons and easiest to be the hack circle/escort

I was successful on my first attempt, but it took around 40 minutes, due to I didn't use any equipment. Was playing a sniper infiltrator though.

You can definitely do it. Just take your time, and always stay calm in situations. Kiting on objectives is a must.

I'd suggest playing whatever you feel comfortable with. Out of the choices, I'd personally choose the Turian Sentinel, not being able to dodge/roll can make it a little tougher though. Just keep at it and you'll complete it. Best of luck to you!

I did a few no-consumables, no-gel, no-ops, no-missile attempts on a few different maps and with a few different characters just to get a feel for what might work.

Once I ammoed up, and decided to invest my consumables. I got it first try. It was however a brutal solo with many many close calls. By the end, I used everything I had, every missile, every gel, every ops, every thermal. It came down to the wire at extraction, literally huddled in a corner with no shields and a sliver of health, as a brute and two banshees casually walked up to me, but it timed down and it was successful.

My second attempt was much smoother, and I reached wave 9 or 10 without using much in the way of equipment, but then... disconnected from mass effect servers. My third attempt was similar to the second, much smoother. Got to extraction with a lot to spare. Once I got the banner, I have not soloed since... imo solo is just not fun, and lacks the depth that playing with other people bring.

Obviously kiting is a big aspect to soloing, but my biggest piece of advice is learn how to not kill anything during an objective round (except targets) and instead just kite them.

Having managed a few Bronze solos, and three Silvers, Gold took me several attempts (maybe even ten) spread over a couple of months.
First attempts were "easy mode" on White - and were terrible.
I tried various kits against Reapers, on Giant and Ghost; did quite well with the Justicar and the TGI, but kept getting surprise-grabbed by Banshees on wave 8 or 9. Too much running away not looking ahead!
Finally returned to "easy mode" on Glacier, and got my Lone Wolf.

Exact same set up for my first gold solo runs. Damage spec'd TGI with Harrier - Magazine V, Barrell V with armor-piercing IV makes short work of ravagers and brutes. Overload is great at stripping banshee bariers.

Giant is a great map to move round clockwise from the lz and as stated above helps with keeping your ammo topped up.

Still took 3 games to get my first extraction then another 2 to finish lone wolf, sometimes you just get a bad objective or sneaky spawn and everything goes to heck! also outofnowherebansheehug on wave 11 is always a risk.

If you can make it to wave 10 you can make it to extraction, good luck with the next try.

Eh, I got it at the first try. Then I tried soloing Geth as a Kroguard and failed twice.

... Guess what? Yeah, TGI Is broken now and it was even more broken at release.

In months? 6 maybe? I'd been trying to nail that gold solo ever since I unlocked the Krogard. Just here an there, not obsessively.

Finally succeeded with TGI & with Havoc this past week. Maybe on my about 20th try? Had a few wave 9 attempts nulled by friends jumping in when I'd forgotten to set invisible :)

Don't remember exact time but it was with Asari Adept back in the demo. It was hard.
