How long did it take to get your first Gold Solo? (long as in attempts made, not your actual time in-match)

Out of my 8 Gold solos, I finished 7 (the only fail came after getting a 10 waves survived medal; I went down 5 seconds before the extraction, haha).

Fastest time so far was 44 minutes, again using the easy-mode set up above but on Glacier.

I was told to melee all the things, and I did (I may have shot some rounds but whatever). And as long as I had Rage going I was fine, although I lost it a couple of times during objective waves and during the two-Prime waves when I couldn't split the pair of Primes up.
As a general rule I didn't take on more than three mooks at a time. If I got staggered I repositioned asap. My strategy was to spread them out and take them down almost one by one, out of line of sight of all the others and especially the Primes. Avoiding the stagger was crucial.
Fear not, DragonRacer, you will be able to do it soon!

Granted, I play under "no 'gelling" restrictions but I feel like such a ******, since I consider myself a pretty good gold and fairly decent platinum player...

2 attempts platinum, 2 failures. Wiped at wave 8 and 9.
My problem is that I get too impatient and I don't have the skills to eliminate enemies efficiently before I get overwhelmed.

So, after spectacularly failing Gold Solo attempt # 4 tonight, I am curious how long it took everyone here to get their first one and if you have any advice to offer on anything I am missing at this point. Because I am hitting a dead end despite my extensive reading and video watching.
I consider myself a very solid, veteran Gold player. In a team, I'm fine. Even with only one other person, I do fine. But subtract one and I may as well be a babe lost in the woods.
Attempts # 1 and 2 were about a month or so ago. I tried the BSN "easy mode" everyone talks about... first was Kroguard/Reegar Geth/Glacier. Died on Wave 3 objective. I then tried TGI/Mattock Cerberus/Rio. Died on Wave 3 objective. Both are characters that you're supposed to just show up with and hit the "I Win" button, right? If you have even a shred of talent or skill at all, right?
*sigh*
Went back to my old, reliable Turian Sentinel. Attempt # 3 was made about two weeks ago, after a lot of practice on Gold duos with a good friend. Figured I could handle it now. Was better at kiting enemies and not trying to rush objectives. T-Sent/Mattock Geth/Giant. Died after deactivating 2 devices on Wave 6.
Led me to tonight. Same character, but set aside my beloved Mattock for the Harrier. Armored Compartments V, Incendiary Ammo IV, Cyclonic Modulator IV... and settled for Targeting VI III since the store never, ever, ever sees fit to give me more than one assault rifle rail amp a month, apparently. Reapers/Giant. Everyone says Reapers are the easiest now, right? Right?
*sigh*
It was my best attempt to date. Made it to Wave 10. Died on the third target. The match was practically gift-wrapped for me objective-wise. Wave 3 hack, got it done fairly quick. Wave 6 and 10 were both targets. Missiled the first target to try and "switch" to something lesser than a Banshee or Brute, but that didn't work, so I ended up blowing precious missiles I could have used later. Like when I got backed into a wall with two Banshees and two Brutes dancing on my head while Ravagers and Marauders shot me. Banshee picked me up for a hug, but something else killed me. I medigelled, even though the situation was hopeless. Got pummeled and couldn't even move, blocked by the bodies. Died. Medigelled again... please, I was so close, you can't do this to me now... detonate tech armor in desperation. Got pummeled. Medigelled again... whyyyyy, I was sooooo clooooose... died again. Used all my gels right there, just because I didn't want to admit I'd failed again, not after coming that far. As the Mission Failed screen mocked me, I felt misty-eyed.
Frustration. So much frustration. I don't think I'm a bad player. But maybe I am. Because everyone here seems able to solo Gold blindfolded with one hand tied behind their back, and I am just failing so, so miserably. And it's honestly stressful. I hate soloing. Not because of the time factor... I'll kite for four hours, I don't care. That last attempt was 66 minutes. But it's just stressful to try and do this alone. Hands were actually shaking by Wave 9, from both excitement that I might make it and from the stress of trying to kite those two Banshees for so long.
But I feel like I really need to get at least one Gold solo to really be a good player at this game. Two would be amazing and actually give me hope that I can one day complete all the challenges.
Is there any hope for me? Is there some magical thing I'm missing? Some hint or tip that I have somehow missed in all this? Is four failed attempts average? Good? Bad? Am I wasting my time at this point, am I trying to do something that I just don't have enough skill to do? Should I just give in and try to do the Kroguard or TGI again, instead of trying to be more "legitimate" with my Turian Sentinel?
Help me...
tl;dr: I suck at solos. Gold solo is evading me like Captain Ahab's white whale. Any advice beyond learn2play? And how many times did you try to solo Gold before succeeding?
I would say at lest almost 100 times, but in my condition it can be normal (I'm quadriplegic) here if you want to take a look at my 1st Gold solo I'm trying to get my 2nd and now I'm around 20 games trying the 2nd....
Keep trying you will get it.

I used the easies setup possible. Kroguard with Reegar vs. Geth on FB White. To be absolutely sure used Cyclonic IV and Incendiary ammo IV.

2nd attempt also successful.
I did 10 Bronze and 5 Silvers first.
I was cautious, with my Tankiest Kroguard and best consumables.
The first solo was took a numbing 2hr 15mins. 2nd 1hr 30.
I had my plan and route on Giant v Geth and stuck to it.
Safe. Probably boring. But reliable.
Shoot, shoot from soft cover - fall back.
Extreme caution on objectives kiting along prearranged path coming back to hacks and drones.
Leave the Primes to last.
That's it.
