After playing and replaying the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series umpteen times, I figured it was time to get to grips with some older Bioware games, as it's clear to me that I love the particular style.

I noted that KotOR and KotOR II were both available on Steam for just under one and a half British Pounds each, so I thought 'what the hell', and grabbed both.

It's a very weird thing going from a 'modern standard' game to an older title in terms of graphical presentation. Just like how I used to think Doom (back in the 90s) looked absolutely cutting edge...but if I try to play the original none-sourceported game now it feels like I can't see anything except huge, blocky pixels, that gives me a migrain! It's like my mental capacity to view, and translate onscreen graphics is 'upgraded' every time the technology moves on, resulting in my eyes becoming 'incompatible' with older technology.

If I play long enough though, I slowly 'slip back' into the older grahics mode, and stop noticing the downgrade.

Same with KotOR. My first hour within the game seemed very jarring, and discordant, because everything seemed very primitive and low res, having gone straight  from a modern title to this game. After a while though things started to settle into place, I was able to 'plug myself in' to the game world, and now I'm connecting with everything, not noticing the low res environment.

Made a total mess of my first attempt. Started a Scoundral (seemed like a fun, versatile class), but had no idea where to assign poiints into stats, feats or skills, and just clicked stuff arbitrarily, hoping it would be useful. It was ok at first, but by the time I got to the Lower City on Taris, I was getting my ass creamed by the Black Volkar guys.. couldn't seem to hit anything with the sword I was wielding, and my companion died in a heartbeat.

Since then, I've restarted, after reading some player guids, and realised I was assigning points to all the wrong places, plus I'd not had a proper understanding of the queue system, and had been trying to do stuff mostly in realtime. Now I've gone twin blaster, with high Agility and Wisdom and things are a damned sight easier.

At the time of writing this, I just defeated that Bendak Starkiller guy in the arena at level 5, after around seven failed attempts! I confess I ended up setting the game skill to easy, but Ye Gods, it was still rock hard! Ended up just lobbing grenades at him again and again, and spamming health kits every time he put me in that horrible stun lock, and at last he fell.

To cut a long post short, I'm loving the game, though it took me some time to understand everything (even the basics). I'm also considering getting hold of some other older Bioware games, perhaps Jade Empire.

I'm given to understand that Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's gate are 100% impossible to run under Windows 7 64 bit, but it may be possible to get them running on a VMWare virtual desktop, or something similar. I'll look into it.

Jade Empire is very good as well, once you get used to the awkward combat. Make sure you run it in administrator mode though, otherwise you'll lose your saves when you quit the game.

Who told you that? The Baldur's Gate games and Neverwinter Nights work fine on Windows 7, in fact I finished a long replay of both Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II just a couple of weeks ago on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. The only BioWare games that I had any difficulty with running on Windows 7 are KotOR and Jade Empire, and you obviously got KotOR working.

I'd actually advise skipping Neverwinter Nights, the original campaign and Shadows of Undrentide are rather 'meh. Hordes of the Underdark is much better, but still rather lackluster compared to the studio's other productions.

Ah, so those games do run under Win7 64bit?

It seems my research took me to the wrong websites (I basically Googled the question, and was directed to a message board with some frustrated players claiming they were unable to get the games to run, a couple of people replied, saying it was 'impossible' and not to even bother trying.)

As for Starkiller, yep he was a hard case.. but he's a dead hard case now, and I have his blaster! Muhahahaah (etc.)
