 :crying: Why is there no spears in this game, I personally love spears my favorite weapons of choice and I am kinda disappointed that there none in D,A O

There should be spears just like 2H swords. axes and maul

In medieval Europe (Ferelden is more or less based on Scotland) the spear was used for two things: hunting and ranked infantry fighting. The spear is a rather inconvenient weapon to lug around with you all of the time, and unless used in conjunction with other spearmen it is a sub-par fighting implement.

Maybe those filthy cape-wearng, horse-riding barbarians that never made it into the game were still using the spear in single combat, but the rest of Ferelden has moved on.

I agree. Spears should be in the game as the 2-handed piercing weapons.

2-handed sword, axe = slashing

maul = crushing

2H swords were wielded by the largest and most impressive soldiers they were also used to guard banners and castle walls. The Italian humanist historian Paulus Jovius writing in the early 1500s also described the two-hand great sword as being used by Swiss soldiers to chop the shafts of pikes at the battle of Fornovo in 1495 so really they should not be put into this game but then that would be boring :D

Well, spears being lugged around would seem out of place in Ferelden, but I can see why you'd want them. It's a valid question, and I've frequently thought about asking whether weapons like Scythes and Halberds could possibly be included. Just a hope, who knows, they may release them in awakening. :D

Weapons like Scythes are mainly used by farmers and halberds are used to take people of mounts they used the hooked part to trip them and then the axe or spear tip to kill them while they are down

but still they should be in the game

Im not so sure on this but perhaps they arent in game because, warfare in ferelden never really developed "long weapon" tactics such as phalanxes schiltroms and other such pike or spear formations but as we see at ostagar it relies on Hounds and Heavy infantry.

Just a thought =P

But who knows but maybe in future DLCs or expansions we will see them. (maybe in awakening)

The polearms are in storage with these mythical 'horse' creatures we keep hearing about but never seeing.  I have nothig against the spear, or guisarme or any other polearm, but you have to admit  that walking around the forest with one and pokin it at people is rather 'unrealistic'.   Everything in DA is fairly logical.  I would say realistic, but then people would start ****ing about fireballs and dragons instead of getting the actual point.

I think this is a valid point.  At Ostagar people are just milling about instead of fighting in formation.  (That whole 'based loosely on scotland' thing again).   It will be intresting to see Orlais, since from all accounts they are fairly equine-centric.  If horses are a common battelfield site, then infantry formations utilizing polearms are likely to exist, meaning that polearms are more likely to be found laying about in the hands of adventurers who thought taking a 10' long stick into a 6' high cave was a good idea.

That's a very interesting point, with the whole Orlesian thing and their chevaliers. Would be interesting if the Orlesian WC in Awakenings was trained as a Chevalier (assuming a warrior-type route was followed at creation) with some proficiency in spears/halberds.

In the DA novel The Calling, an important character is killed by a group of soldiers with... yes, spears. That part made me smile; I'm probably wrong, and it wasn't Gaider's intention, but in my mind I saw it as another reference to this kind of cyclical forum conversations.

Yes, a group of soldiers, not one guy who decided a 10' pole was more convenient to carry than a sword or axe.
