Hi guys,

It’s my first time posting on the forums, so I hope I’m
going to do it right!

What Chris is saying is that thinking of the next Mass
Effect game as Mass Effect 4 would imply a certain linearity, a straight
evolution of the gameplay and story of the first three games. But because we
are switching to a new engine and need to rebuild a bunch of game systems, we
have an opportunity to rethink how we want these systems to be going forward
instead of just inheriting them from the previous games. Story-wise, the arc of
the first trilogy has also been concluded, and what we will do is tell a new
story set in the Mass Effect universe. That doesn’t mean that events of the
first three games and the choices you made won’t get recognized, but they
likely won’t be what this new story will focus on.

In other words, because the game takes place before of
after the first trilogy does not mean it necessarily is a straight prequel or
sequel.

I’m not a big fan of analogies because the images you use
always mean something different to different people, so they are inherently
flawed. But let me use one anyway. :P

If you had three games centered around a group of key
soldiers in the US army during World War I and then decided to make a game
about another group of people during the second World War, the games could have
many points in common and feel true to one another, and you likely would have
to recognize how the events of the first war influenced the ones of the second,
but you would not necessarily think of it as a sequel. Again, the analogy is
not great, but what I’m trying to say is that the ME universe is so rich that
we are not limited to a single track when coming up with a new story.

I apologize for being cryptic right now, but it’s early
enough in development that we don’t have much to share – things still fluctuate
quite a bit. As I have posted on Twitter though, the overall feeling of what
you are discussing and asking for is very much aligned with what the team
intends on delivering, and that makes me feel very good about where we’re
heading!

I hope this helps clarify why we’re not thinking of the
next ME game as ME4 internally!

Welcome to the forums, thanks for the awesome post. I know it will be years in the future, but I can't wait to hear what is next for the ME series.

I'm good with anything your team may come up with...

Except one concept; the MMO!!

I don't want that! I don't want to play a Bi-standard hero amongst a gazillion other equally powerful bi-standard, Following in Shepard's shadow with no story dept, barely any relationships with crew mates and... god have mercy on my soul... the introduction of the dreaded PVP option... No way!!!

Heh, there's the formatting thing, but that happens to everyone who's new to posting here. A rite of passage, I guess :P

Thank you for taking the time to post. It's always very interesting getting a small glimpse of insight into the development process of something you love - from a chocolate factory to a video game developer ^_^

I'm not sure that the use of "Mass Effect 4" will become problematic, it seems a natural result of having next to no knowledge of what it'll be about. Maybe we'll start calling it something else when the first details are revealed. Oh, well. Trying not to think of it too much, since it's still a long ways off :)

I don't care.

I'm calling it ME4.

So, out of a bit of respect for Chris' wishes, I propose we come up with a new temporary acronym for the next installment in the Mass Effect franchise. It's nothing too important, but it's something I felt worth putting into effect.

If that was Bioware opinion on how games should be numbered then why did they call it "DA2" when that is such a great disservice to DA:O?
Shouldn't the PR/community managers try to appear to be somewhat consistent with what Bioware is actually doing? [e.g. games as art vs "future DLC depends on Leviathan sales"]

I do not understand what you are talking about Selene. In a time context , I only know of 3 possible situations. The events happen before, during or after another set of events.
They can be set before during or after any point of Shepherds story. We may never see or hear about Shep or even know what he's doing. But it has to be done either during, after or before what Shep did. Or am I mising something?

See bold modifier by me in your quoted comment. In that case, timeframe has no meaning.

This kind of talk makes me so nervous about ME4 (or whatever you want to call it).  Of course timeframe has meaning!  You are developing an IP that may continue in various mediums for many years.  Establishing the canon for that universe is important.  You can't be so aloof about something as important as the timeframe of the story.  If somebody asks when the story takes place, is the answer going to be "oh I dunno... whenever" with a nonchalant shrug?  Could they do that with Star Wars?  If someone asked the timeframe for The Old Republic, would the answer "timeframe has no meaning because it's not about Luke Skywalker" be at all acceptable to Star Wars fans?

This is an absolute fact:  the next Mass Effect game takes place before, during or after the events in ME1-3 and that timeframe has to be clearly established in the game's story.  If you try to put ME4 into some weird time-bubble and refuse to establish it in relation to ME1-3, you'll anger fans even more than the ending of ME3 did.

Yeah. In one way or another the story has to be set before, during or after the events of Mass Effect 3. Not talking about Shepard doesn't change that.
Unless they decide on a complete reboot of the series or go down the alternate timeline/parallel universe line (god forbid).

I get what Yanick Roy is saying. But even then those two isolated adventures is still set on the same timeline. In one way or another they have be set before, during or after eachother.

And regarding the name. I'll keep saying ME4 till I know what the real name will be. As fiendishchicken said; ease of use.
ME4= The next Mass Effect game.

My $0.02: Selene Moonsong is defending the party line which unfortunately does not make much sense: The date of an event X (e.g. sack of rice falling over in China) does not depend on its relevance on the plot - even if you do not happen to be nearby you could in theory go there and see if it's still standing, currently in the process of falling over or already on the ground.

I don't think he meant that time doesn't literally matter, but rather the actual words prequel / midquel / sequel being connected to the main story line of ME1-3.

Funny, that a lot of people thinks that the next game in the Mass Effect universe must have the name Mass Effect 4 or Mass Effect X (Where x stands for a title). About the little information we currently have, to speculate about, it could also be a scenario like this:

Game title: Tech Wars (Let´s say it´s the start of a new trilogy).
Universe: The Mass Effect Universe.
Timeline: Long after the events happened in Mass Effect 3.
Situation of the galaxy: Depending if a save from Mass Effect 3 will be imported or not, the start situation of the universe will vary.
Player: The Player can choose his / her race (Human / Krogan / Salarian / Asari / Turian / Quarian / Drell or Volus. Elcor or Hanar? Well, nah!)

Plot: Many decades/centuries after the events of Mass Effect 3 a new artficial race appears in the galaxy and spreads it´s influence on the other known races. Not with military ways in general. Secretly this race infiltrates the military, goverments and the galactic trade markets. This race uses it´s tech potenial to gain more and more control over the organics. Rumors spreading the galaxy of people / ships / colonies dissapearing.

The player finds him-/herself discovering the rising threat of that unknown race to gain control over the organic races. The player must find the little puzzle elements, scattered all over the galaxy, to get the bigger picture / the origin of the unknown artficial race and thier plan. He/She must gather a team / form a movement against this threat and to be able to discover the hidden secrets and to withstand the dangers coming thier way. Because the unknown race is already aware of it and tries to stop the player.

Depending on the ending in Mass Effect 3 the unknown artficial race has it more or less easy to spread itself throughout the galaxy and the different organic known races. In the same way the player has it more or less easy to group up a team and to find a way to stop the new unknown race. An example: If the Rachni Queen survived in the first Mass Effect trilogy, the player can locate the Rachni and trying to get thier help.
In the final phase of the game a war begins to start between the "tech´s", controlled by the unknown artficial race, and the "organics". The player and his / her group is struggleing to save thier own lives and the future of the organics.

Sometimes the player is in the middle of a battle, sometimes the battle raging on in the background while the player must complete his / her mission objectives.

At the end a large battle is won and stops the further advance of the unknown race. Well, for the moment because the war is only beginning and far from over.

The "Tech Wars" trilogy is born.

Point is: It doesn´t need to have "Mass Effect" in the title. It has the entire Mass Effect universe inside the game, with all the races, thier history and so on.

Just my 50 cents.

(Sorry for eventual misspellings. I´m not a native english speaker)

I know you can't give much away, but would it be fair to say that at the very least, the galaxy we know and love containing all the aliens, lore, history etc. from the previous trilogy will remain in tact even if Shepard's story is done?

What makes it Mass Effect is indead the alien races, the technology, the lore, history, etc. You can safely expect those in the next Mass Effect.:)

Awesome!

I was afraid that ME4 would feature an entirely new universe (i.e. no Turians, Asari, Krogan, etc.). I'm looking forward to returning to the MEU then.

Correct, that's what I meant. Time does indeed matter, but the words prequel / midquel / sequel come loaded with a bunch of other assumptions that don't necessarily all apply to the next ME game.

If it does take place after ME3, I'd be happy with save game imports that don't affect the story immensely, like The Witcher 2. There the save imports change some small details that give some extra flavor to the experience without changing it altogether.

That would be difficult with a new Mass Effect game, however, since the outcome of the endings can be very different.
