Looking back over it after not playing for about a year or so, its a really good game. Despite being limited to Kirkwall, its a very good story, both MHawke and FHawke give good performances, and it truly sets the stage for Dragon Age III
Plus Snarky!Hawke is the greatest ever!

Personally, I liked DA2 more than Origins, and with it being so cheap right now, it's definitely worth picking up.
Same here.
But you will hate the game if you go expecting it to be DAO 2. It is not, the only similarities are that they take place in the same world. The pace is completely different. I loved it and found it refreshing but a lot of people felt disappointed. You will probably see them on this thread, the DA2 hate is huge around BSN (as is DA2 love).
I myself loved both games but DA2 was more my style.

I think this is the best advice. Don't go into it expecting it to be DA:O at all. If you loved DA:O and are getting DA2 because of that love, then be very cautious. If you just want to get the game so you can know everything that is going on, I'd honestly say there's nothing world-plot affecting in DA2 that can't be (and probably will be) explained in the first opening cutscene of DA3.
But if you want a gaming experience and can unfetter yourself from expecting DA:O, then feel free to play DA2 and enjoy it. There are some bugs, there are some low points, there are some times you want to just throw your hands up in the air at the plot or your companions, but its not TERRIBLE.
It just seems terrible in the shadow of DA:O (to some people, I might add).

If only...I bought DA2 at launch in 2011, but thanks to circumstances and other games, I never got around to playing it--it's been sitting on my shelf for almost two years, and I think that I was unduly influenced by the negative user feedback. Thanks to my near-exclusive play with ME3, and my own thoughts on its quality, I have reconsidered this approach to DA2. I am guilty of letting the recently addressed tone and mood of the BSN influence me away from playing what most of you are saying is a great BioWare product. But thanks to the immensity of ME3, its superlative multiplayer, my more recent connections with more positively-minded fans, and the general philosophy of BioWare--of which I am far more aware now--I really want to re-up as a loyal fan, as I was from the second I heard the words "Battle Meditation." I really appreciate all of the great and good-natured feedback from this thread, because now I'm really excited to rediscover Ferelden in time for the Inquisition!

You should play DA2 at least once because, as EntropicAngel said, it sets the stage for DA3. Reading the novel Asunder after you play DA2 will also be helpful, lore wise, but is not necessary.valhallaVANDAL wrote...
I have heard many conflicting arguments as to the merits and shortcomings of Dragon Age 2, a game that I have not played. As Dragon Age 3 is on its way, and assuming that I enjoyed (quite a lot, actually) Dragon Age: Origins, what reasons can you guys give me to generate some saves to import to Dragon Age 3?
In short: why SHOULD I play Dragon Age 2?
As far as the merits of generating "some saves to import", I've no idea. At the moment we don't know what their import system will be, nor what parts of DA2 will carry over. I would just suggest you play it once. If you like it, play it again and pick different choices. I don't think you will do yourself a disservice by just playing once though.
Also, don't forget to patch.

I won't say it's perfect by any means, but the companions are still enjoyable, the gameplay is still really fun, and if you can get around the reused settings there are some pretty great moments.
Don't knock it til you try it, basically.

The game's only real saving grace is that Hawke is pretty well voiced, so you wont get tired of that.

It is. Going into it in detail would involve a lot of spoilers which would not be appropriate to this forum. Suffice to say that you have to play aggressive Hawke, you have to side with Varnell and then Sister Petrice in Act 2.
It's a special easter egg for aggressive Hawke and it's the only way that Petrice can survive Act 2.

Try to avoid direct comparisons with origins though, think of it as a spin-off title set within the same chronology.

Playing trough DA 2 again....it IS a good game if you can accept its one big-ass-major flaw, recycled environments. For the story, DA 2 is a must have, simple.
I have to say that the DLC for DA 2, at least Mark of the Assasin is really worth the money. Choosing the "funny" choice in the dialogue wheel made me laugh hard quite a few times.
The lack of an overriding goal - stopping the blight, for example - really bothered me in DA2. It was like a story with a beginning and a middle but no "end". Everything could've happened in the middle. The antagonista were interchangeable. The story would have been the same If they had switched the order of chantry / Mage war and civil war against the Qunari.
In a kill foozle game ( google it ), there has to be a Foozle, else there is no point.

It'll probably have several default options to choose from like DA2Dormiglione wrote...
So far i know is that DA3 features a new protagonist. So i deleted all my savegames of DA2. I want to see the story of DA3 without any impacts of a savegame import. Just the default story settings.

DA2 is crap, don't waste your money. As a whole is the worst RPG of a known developer in the last years.

If you just want to delve back into the world of thedas, then yeah, play DA2. Just get ready for disappointment, mixed in with the rare enjoyable moment.
